What’s leaving Netflix UK in June / July 2019?
David Farnor | On 15, Jun 2019
Summer’s here, and there’s no better time to run and frolic outside, but before you do, make sure you won’t miss the departure of your favourite film or TV show from Netflix UK, as another month ends and rights expire. This June, that means bidding farewell to mouth-watering indie gem, a timeless piece of food journalism, a stunning anime and a franchise-starting horror. This is your last chance to stream the following on Netflix UK:
The Lunchbox – 20th June
Charming in its simplicity, this dainty drama is a delectable treat worth savouring.
The Purge – 20th June
What if, for 12 hours, any and all crime was legal? That’s the starting point for James DeMonaco’s horror, as one wealthy family’s hostage situation proves to be the starting point for a whole franchise and political and action-packed offerings – including a TV spin-off.
T2: Trainspotting – 21st June
It’s been 20 years since heroin addict Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) ripped off his lowlife friends and fled to Amsterdam with all the proceeds from a drug deal. Now clean, he returns to Edinburgh to make amends but finds that little has changed.
Sing – 21st June
This musical comedy is a charming animation packed with overwhelming positivity.
Avengers: Age of Ultron – 25th June
More stuffed than a turkey at Christmas, sequel sees Marvel’s main ensemble team up once again to tackle Ultron, a mildly unhinged robot created by Tony Stark and Bruce Banner.
Christine – 27th June
Rebecca Hall is remarkable in this drama about Christine Chubbuck, the Florida newsreader who, in 1974, shot herself live on air. This nuanced, sensitive character study is a provocative, powerful watch that will stay with you for days.
God’s Own Country – 29th June
This fantastic British debut is a poignant tale of young romance, maturing identity, and mutual belonging.
Kicks – 29th June
Lyrical, gritty, moving and ambitious, this study of boys trying to be men is a directorial debut from a striking new talent.
Berlin Syndrome – 29th June
Somersault director Cate Shortland helms this tense thriller about an Australian tourist who finds herself held prisoner in the German capital, cycling between reasoning with her captor, surrendering to his obsessions, and plotting her escape.
A Monster Calls – 1st July
JA Bayona’s adaptation of Patrick Ness’ novel is a hugely moving tribute to the profound power of storytelling.
Knights of Sidonia – 2nd July
Based on the best-selling manga series by Tsutomu Nihei, this superb anime follows the struggle of humans to survive against the monstrous alien “Gauna” using mecha weapons called ”Garde” (Guardian Robots). The story focuses on the ship Sidonia and young Garde pilot Nagate Tanikaze as he uses his amazing combat skills to protect what remains of human civilisation.
Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown – 2nd July
The late, great Anthony Bourdain was the kind of TV presence designed for bingeing: enthusiastic, informed, respectful and curious, he remains the ideal companion for this documentary series, which takes us on a tour of the globe for discoveries, entertaining debates and culinary delights. You’ll see fast food, slow food, hot food and cold food, all sampled with an appetite for new things and a respect for every bite.
Fargo – 4th July
Steve Buscemi, Frances McDormand and William H Macy star in the Coen brothers’ hilariously dark thriller about a car salesman who tries to get two men to kidnap his own wife and bag the ransom money.
Split – 4th July
M. Night Shyamalan is back in business with this creepy psychological horror. It begins with the abduction of three teenage girls – BFFs Claire (Haley Lu Richardson) and Marcia (Jessica Sula), plus loner Casey (The Witch’s Anya Taylor-Joy). They wake up in the underground lair of one Kevin Crumb (James McAvoy), a man whose struggles with dissociative identity disorder are about to take a profoundly unsettling turn.
Loving – 11th July
After getting married in Washington DC, unassuming working man Richard Loving (Joel Edgerton), who’s white, and his bride Mildred (Oscar nominee Ruth Negga), who’s black, return to their home state of Virginia to be with their families. But with interracial marriage outlawed in the state, the couple find themselves jailed and then banished from everything they hold dear. But after years in exile, they decide to take their case to the Supreme Court. Two admirably understated performances and direction to match from Jeff Nichols (Mud, Midnight Special) make this a splendidly clear-eyed account of a civil rights case that changed American history.
Gone Baby Gone – 14th July
Casey Affleck and Michelle Monaghan impress as two cops investigating the disappearance of a 4-year-old girl from a rough Boston neighbourhood – but Gone Baby Gone’s most impressive star is perhaps behind the camera, as Ben Affleck proves his directorial skills with a tense debut.
