Spotlight – 28th July

This Oscar-winning drama about the Boston Globe’s investigation into childhood abuse at the hands of Catholic priests in the early 2000s is understated, gripping, important viewing.

Dunkirk – 28th July

Christopher Nolan’s impeccably composed war film turns gung-ho conflict into survival horror, as British troops on the beach of Dunkirk struggle to stay alive long enough for an unprecedented rescue operation to get them home. Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy and Kenneth Branagh star alongside in a harrowing piece of cinema that still booms with dread, even on the small screen.

Dallas Buyers Club – 31st July

Matthew McConaughey is remarkable in this powerful, moving true life drama.

Mars Attacks! – 31st July

Tim Burton takes on aliens in this wonderfully warped sci-fi, which sees hostile extra-terrestrials invade the planet – only to be fought off by Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Tom Jones (playing Tom Jones) and Jack Nicholson as the President of the United States.

Rango – 31st July

Surreal, serious and surprisingly subvertise, some of Rango’s subtleties may go over younger viewers’ heads, but Gore Verbinski’s gorgeous animation and Hans Zimmer’s hilariously silly score makes for a bizarre, post-modern Western that is packed full of ideas and laughs.

Lady Bird – 1st August

Greta Gerwig finds profound universality in everyday specifics with this heartfelt coming-of-age gem.

Wild – 5th August

Reese Witherspoon shines in this true story about a woman moving on from the past to find her own happy ending.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – 7th August

Bilbo Baggins relucsntly leaves his comfy life in The Shire to join a company of dwarves in this stretched adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s classic. It goes there and back and there and back and there and back again. Like its tiny hero, though, you’ll enjoy most of it.

The Wife – 12th August

Glenn Close delivers a powerhouse turn in this quietly gripping drama.

Inglourious Basterds – 13th August

Tarantino’s stylish, striking revision of world history is impressive but uneven.

Pitch Black – 13th August

Back before they tried to give Riddick his own Chronicles, David Twohy’s stripped down sci-fi thriller was a fantastic B-movie beast.

Dickensian – 20th August

Tony Jordan’s mash-up of Charles Dickens characters into his own playful drama offers period larks and literary references aplenty.
