What’s leaving Netflix UK in August / September 2018?
David Farnor | On 15, Aug 2018
Summer is – whisper it – drawing to a close, and with September looming on the horizon, bringing with it work and school, it’s easy to start feeling the autumn blues. Adding to the sadness in the air is the monthly departure of films and series from Netflix UK, from Top of the Lake to The Revenant. Parents be relieved: a number of kids’ Nickelodeon favourites, including Dora the Explorer and PAW Patrol, are no longer on their way out.
This month is your last chance to stream the following:
2 Guns – 15th August
Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg team up for this buddy comedy thriller. A guns-blazing, wisecracking action film. Nothing more – and nothing less.
Top of the Lake – 16th August
Elisabeth Moss makes the most of her chance to step out of her Mad Men shoes in Jane Campion’s series, which sees Detective Robin Griffin return to her New Zealand hometown to solve the disappearance of a local teen. Gripping stuff.
The Revenant – 23rd August
Proof that Leonardo DiCaprio will go to any extreme for an award, Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s intense survival epic set on the fur-trading frontier of the 1820s sees DiCaprio’s trapper chased through the woods, battered by blizzards and mauled by a bear.
Deadpool – 3rd September
Ryan Reynolds is on charmingly foul-mouthed form in this self-aware superhero comedy.
Midnight Special – 7th September
Jeff Nichols confirms himself as one of the most exciting, recognisable US indie directors around with this quietly dazzling sci-fi, which sees the government and a mysterious cult pursue a young boy with special powers and his kidnappers across the country. Steeped in Spielbergian sentiment and sincerity, it’s a film that channels the nostalgic wonder of the 80s into an engrossing study of fatherhood and faith. If you liked Stranger Things, try this.
The Nice Guys – 14th September
Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe make for an entertaining odd couple in Shane Black’s retro crime caper.
