What’s leaving Netflix UK in February / March 2018?
David Farnor | On 20, Feb 2018
February is a trick month, placed in our calendars by the gods to trick us into thinking we have more time on this mortal earth than really do. That’s more apparent than ever when it comes to Netflix, as March sneaks up and threatens to throw away all the things in your watchlist you’ve been waiting to see. From magical family fun to Guillermo del Toro horror, this is your last chance to stream the following on Netflix UK:
Merlin – 22nd February
In a land of myth and a time of magic… This charming BBC fantasy series takes a Smallville-style look at the legends of King Arthur, and introduced the world to the brilliant Colin Morgan and Katie McGrath.
Blade II – 23rd February
Guillermo del Toro takes the helm in this underrated horror / superhero sequel, as Wesley Snipes’ Blade forms an uneasy alliance with the vampire council in order to combat the Reapers, who are feeding on vampires.
Oh! What a Lovely War – 25th February
Richard Attenborough’s directorial debut gives World War I the musical treatment in what has become a satirical classic.
Captain Phillips – 1st March
We’ve never been held captive on a boat by pirates, but after watching Captain Phillips, we can say with confidence that it isn’t very nice. In fact, it’s downright nerve-shredding. But if you’re going to experience the horrific tension of guerilla soldiers invading your freight ship, Paul Greengrass’ thriller is probably the most enjoyable way to do it.
The Walk (2015) – 1st March
Joseph Gordon-Levitt brings to life the true story of Philippe Petit, a wire-walker who famously crossed the gap between the Twin Towers. It’s not a patch on Man on Wire, but what is?
Coherence – 1st March
A mind-bending, mostly-improvised indie sci-fi that sees a dinner party give way to unexpected events.
Groundhog Day – 1st March
This classic comedy starring Bill Murray gets better every time you watch it.
Mistress America – 7th March
Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach team up once again for this superb comedy about hip New York urbanite Brooke, who takes her wide-eyed future stepsister (Mozart in the Jungle’s Lola Kirke) under her wing. Witty, warm and quietly satirical, this is a hilarious, endearingly scathing look at life, identity and success in the modern world.
127 Hours – 9th March
James Franco delivers a heart-stopping, arm-wrenching performance in this gripping true life thriller about Aron Ralston, who becomes trapped by a boulder in an isolated canyon.
Into the Wild – 10th March
Emile Hirsch delivered a starmaking turn in Sean Penn’s powerful, moving drama about Christopher McCandless, the son of wealthy parents who graduated as a top student and athlete, but then decided to give his money to charity and live alone in the Alaskan wilderness.
Straight Outta Compton – 11th March
This Oscar-nominated drama charts the rise and fallouts of controversial legendary hip hop group N.W.A, who burst out of LA’s Compton gangland in the 1980s. Future Jack Bauer successor Corey Hawkins is on stellar form as Dr Dre.
Love Actually – 14th March
For all its cliches, it’s hard to resist Richard Curtis going full Richard Curtis in this rambling, uneven seasonal anthology. Shrewdly commercial yet annoyingly charming, the cast alone make it worth watching, from Emma Thompson’s bittersweet romance to Bill Nighy’s snorting drunkard. And did we mention Hugh Grant as everyone’s dream Prime Minister?
Mystery Science Theater 3000 – 15th March
Netflix’s Mystery Science Theater reboot isn’t going anywhere, but don’t miss your chance to enjoy the charming original episodes of everyone’s favourite sarcastic comment-a-long series, featuring some of the worst films ever made.
Henning Mankell’s Wallander – 20th March
Liked Kenneth Branagh’s take on Mankell’s detective? Try these original TV adaptations for size.
