What’s leaving Amazon Prime Video UK in August / September 2018?
David Farnor | On 22, Aug 2018
It takes a lot to get someone to stick to their sofa in this summer heatwave, but Amazon Prime Video’s list of departing movies may well woo you to spend an extra couple of minutes in your living rom. The end of July bids farewell to one of the best sci-fi movies of recent years, some classic action movies, a powerfully moving documentary and a Watergate thriller that remains all too topical today.
This month is your last chance to stream the following on Amazon Prime Video UK:
Dirty Dancing – 26th August
I’ve had the time of my life…
Sherlock Holmes – 26th August
Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law bring enough bromance to the table as Holmes and Watson, and Guy Ritchie injects enough style behind the camera, to make this big-budget take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stand up surprisingly well to the now iconic BBC adaptation.
Free Willy – 26th August
Jason James Richter brings earnest heart to this definitive 90s family drama about the sentimental bond that forms between a young orphan, Jesse, and Willy, a killer whale separate from his family at the local water park.
Before Sunrise – 26th August
Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy star in Richard Linklater’s swooningly believable tale of two young strangers who meet on a train in Europe and decide to spend the night in Vienna.
Magnolia – 26th August
Paul Thomas Anderson’s fascinating tapestry of humans in varying states of existential and emotional crisis is essential viewing, not least because of its career-best performance from Tom Cruise.
Marguerite – 31st August
In 1921 France, a wealthy woman (Catherine Frot) follows her passion to sing in front of audiences, but no one tells her how bad she is.
Horrible Bosses – 1st September
Jason Bateman, Charlie Day and Jason Sudeikis play three put-upon workers who plan to kill their cruel bosses in this comedy that is far funnier than it should be.
Sleepy Hollow – 1st September
Tim Burton is in his element with this gothic horror based on Washington Irving’s classic tale “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, featuring Christopher Walken as the fabled Headless Horseman.
Practical Magic – 1st September
Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Nicole Kidman), born into a magical family, have mostly avoided witchcraft themselves. But when Gillian’s vicious boyfriend, Jimmy Angelov (Goran Visnjic), dies unexpectedly, the Owens sisters give themselves a crash course in hard magic.
We’re the Millers – 1st September
Ed Helms stars in this comedy about a group of strangers who pose as a familiar to smuggle drugs into the US. The gross-out moments may be hit and miss, but a cameo from Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson) is enough to keep the laughs coming.
Don Jon – 1st September
New Jersey bartender Jon Martello (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) knows what’s important: his friends, his family, his car, his church, his sexual conquests – and porn. In fact, Jon is a porn addict and has never had a genuine relationship with a woman. However, when he meets Barbara (Scarlett Johansson), he realises his life has to change.
