What’s leaving Amazon Prime Video UK in May / June 2020?
David Farnor | On 17, May 2020
With the majority of the UK self-isolating or working from home during the coronavirus outbreak, Amazon Prime Video’s sizeable library of movies and TV shows is a useful resource for keeping entertained. But before you start bingeing through the line-up, don’t miss out on catching up with some modern gems before their rights expire.
This is your last chance to stream the following with Amazon Prime UK:
Stick Man – 17th May
Stick Man tells the tale of a happy-go-lucky father’s epic journey to make it home in time for Christmas. One of the many charming animations based on Julia Donaldson books available with Amazon Prime – don’t worry, the rest aren’t going anywhere just yet.
Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa – 17th May
North Norfolk’s finest radio DJ ends up in a siege in this feature-length outing. A big-screen adventure that keeps things decidedly small, Alpha Papa impresses not because of its laugh count but because of its surprisingly mature take on Steve Coogan’s ageing non-celebrity, which emerges as something tender as well as silly.
Final Destination / Final Destination 5 – 18th May
You’d think that four movies in a row of extended death scenes would get old, but Final Destination 5 comes up with an inspired twist that makes this a surprisingly smart marriage of blood and brains. The best of the series? Go on then. The second best in the series? That’s the first movie – and it’s departing on the same day.
’71 – 23rd May
Is there anything Jack O’Connell can’t do? In a year that saw him take the lead in both Starred Up and Unbroken, he also starred in Yann Demange’s debut flick about a young British soldier abandoned by his unit following a riot on the streets of 1971 Belfast. Unable to tell friend from foe, this is a thrilling, shocking sprint through history that distills war into the simple urge to survive.
Suits: Season 1 to 7 – 26th May
Catch up with the hit US legal drama starring Gabriel Macht and Patrick J Adams – and, fo course, Meghan Markle.
Under the Skin – 31st May
This atmospheric, unsettling, beautifully scored film sticks with you for an inhuman amount of time.
Cockneys vs Zombies – 31st May
This unlikely blend of two iconic genres gives you more than enough Roy Hudd for your Bread and Honey.
The Guest – 5th June
“Mrs. Peterson?” asks the stranger on her doorstep, after ringing the bell. “My name’s David, I knew your son.” You’re Next director Adam Wingard continues his streak of entertaining 80s throwbacks with this thriller, which stars Dan Stevens as a former soldier who inserts himself into the life of an unsuspecting family.
A Fish Called Wanda – 6th June
Kevin Kline is hysterical in this screwball farce that may be the funniest British movie ever made.
The Two Faces of January – 7th June
Oscar Isaac, Viggo Mortensen and Kirsten Dunst are on superb form in this enjoyably old-school Patricia Highsmith adaptation that plays things as cool as its hats.
The Disaster Artist – 8th June
James Franco transforms the true-story of aspiring filmmaker and infamous Hollywood outsider Tommy Wiseau — an artist whose passion was as sincere as his methods were questionable.
The Tudors: Season 1 to 4 – 9th June
The life and wives of Henry VII get the gossipy telly treatment in this enjoyably trashy drama starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers.
Films Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool – 10th June
Annette Bening and Jamie Bell shine in this romantic drama.
Elementary: Season 1 to 5 – 13th June
CBS’ Sherlock series isn’t the BBC series, but that’s the point: this contemporary US update, starring Jonny Lee Miller as Holmes and Lucy Liu as Watson, has won fans thanks to its novel approach to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s originals.
BrainDead: Season 1 – 13th June
BrainDead’s mix of sci-fi, satire and spontaneous combustion makes for a fun distraction from the news. Cancelled after its first season, this underrated comedy is still worth a watch.
