What’s leaving Amazon Prime Video UK in November / December 2017?
James R | On 29, Nov 2017
Christmas giveth, and Christmas taketh away. This Christmas, Amazon Prime Video taketh away a whole heap of treatments, from the snowy (The Hateful Eight) and the religious (Noah) to the thrilling (Mad Max: Fury Road) and the chilling (The Exorcist)
This is your last chance to stream the following on Amazon Prime Video UK:
An American in Paris – 29th November
Gene Kelly stars in this 1951 musical as Jerry, an American ex-GI who stays in post-war Paris to become a painter, and falls for the gamine charms of Lise Bouvier (Leslie Caron). However, his paintings come to the attention of a rich American heiress, who is interested in more than just art. Inspired by the Gershwin piece of the same name, this is toe-tapping, Oscar-winning stuff.
Magnolia – 29th November
Paul Thomas Anderson’s fascinating tapestry of humans in varying states of existential and emotional crisis is essential viewing, not least because of its career-best performance from Tom Cruise.
The Hateful Eight – 5th December
A Christmas film from the director of Pulp Fiction? An anti-western? A contemporary slice of social commentary? Gripping, surprising and superbly executed, The Hateful Eight is a return to form for Tarantino in all the ways that you least expect.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford – 6th December
Andrew Dominik’s slow-paced tale of Jesse and Robert’s friendship, which gradually simmers until boiling over into the titular killing, makes for an absorbing Western. Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck are magnetic.
Se7en – 12th December
Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman are on superb form in what may be David Fincher’s darkest – and perhaps even best – film.
Noah – 14th December
Examining what it takes to blindly follow instructions that will wipe out the rest of humanity, Darren Aronofsky’s version of Noah is bold and idiosyncratic, taking into account everything from fertility and sin to evolution itself. Russell Crowe and Ray Winstone go full pelt in this Biblical epic.
Gone Girl – 14th December
“All we do is cause each other pain.” David Fincher’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s novel takes the central set-up of an amazing wife, Amy (Rosamund Pike), who goes missing, placing suspicion firmly on husband Nick (Ben Affleck), and brings out the dark humour in what emerges as a gleefully dark satire on media and the stories that are told in each.
Adventureland – 14th December
Greg Mottola’s hugely likeable comedy-drama recreates the feel of the 1980s with wonderful wit and warmth – not to mention an aching appreciation for the growing pains of the graduates working over the summer in the titular, dead-end theme park. Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart are on top form.
Bill – 17th December
Shakespeare in LOLs. This daft and delightful semi-fictional biography of William Shakespeare from the Horrible Histories team is Monty Python for kids.
Ben Hur (1959) – 19th December
Charlton Heston delivers an iconic performance in William Wyler’s classic historical epic.
Elvis & Nixon – 23rd December
Kevin Spacey and Michael Shannon star in Amazon’s original film based on the real life meeting between Elvis Presley President Richard Nixon.
Adult Life Skills – 23rd December
This likeable British comedy-drama succeeds thanks to a moving script and a winning performance from Jodie Whittaker.
Mad Max: Fury Road – 24th December
George Miller’s latest entry in the Mad Max series sees Tom Hardy take over Mel Gibson’s role, but its success lies in another character entirely: Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, who leads a string of female prisoners in an escape attempt from their sinister overlord, Immortan Joe. Full of practical stunts, dazzling visuals and burning with a feminist message, this is fantastic, eye-boggling stuff.
The Exorcist – 26th December
The scariest movie ever made? The Exorcist just might be, not because it’s a story of possession, but because it’s a study of one troubled priest’s faith, as it comes up against an extremely powerful dark force.
