Xbox One and Xbox 360 users can now access media streaming apps, such as Netflix and Amazon Instant Video, without the need for a Live Gold Membership.

Use of VOD apps, including 4oD, was previously restricted to paying Live Gold members on both of Microsoft’s gaming consoles, despite the fact that many console owners use them as a way to watch movies and TV shows online. The only exception was BBC iPlayer, which the BBC require to be free on all platforms.

Now, though, June’s latest system update has scrapped the need for a paid Xbox subscription to access both free and subscription VOD services.

Over 50 streaming apps are now available on the Xbox 360 and 17 on the Xbox One, notes Recombu. Another update will enable the use of the SmartGlass app on mobile devices as a universal device in the living room.
