Where can I watch the 2014 BIFA award winners online?
David Farnor | On 08, Dec 2014
“To the winners, congratulations – to the losers: make better films,” joked The Inbetweeners’ Simon Bird at the 2014 British Independent Film Awards last night. It’s a joke because, of course, this year has been one heck of year for independent cinema, from Boyhood and Frank to Mr. Turner and ’71.
Feel-good flick Pride took home the most awards, bagging Best Supporting Actress (Imelda Staunton), Best Supporting Actor (Andrew Scott) and Best British Independent Film. The rest of the prizes, though, were evenly shared between the deserving nominees, from Yann Demange taking Best Director for ’71 and Gugu Mbatha-Raw winning Best Actress for Belle to Brendan Gleeson being named Best Actor for Calvary and Frank winning Best Screenplay, as well as Best Technical Achievement for Stephen Rennicks’ music.
It’s been a significant 12 months for indie movies online too. Indie film and VOD go together like, well, two things that go together very well, offering filmmakers a chance to reach a wider audience given the challenges of securing theatrical distribution – it’s no coincidence that Raindance has its own video on-demand platform. While the fab Raindance Award nominee The Beat Beneath My Feet travels the UK one cinema screen at a time, other BIFA contenders jumped straight into the digital pool: Artificial Eye’s Lilting, starring Ben Whishaw, received a day-and-date VOD release through Curzon Home Cinema, while Congo documentary Virunga premiered on Netflix.
