San Diego Comic-Con is unfolding online again this year due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that doesn’t mean the event isn’t still capable of delivering some surprises – and one of them comes in the form of Blade Runner’s return to our screens.
A new animated series will bring the sci-fi universe to the small screen, with Shinji Aramaki (co-director), Kenji Kamiyama (co-director), Joseph Chou (executive producer) and Wes Gleason (voice director) working to expand the world that began with Philip K Dick’s story of replicants and those seeking to “retire” them – and has since continued with Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049.
The new series will take place between those two films and follows a replicant named Elle, voiced by Jessica Henwick. She’ll be surrounded by neon lights, action and familiar touchstones from the Blade Runner world, not least of them being the Tyrell Corporation. Henwick will be joined on vocal duties by Brian Cox, Wes Bentley, Samira Wiley, Will Yun Lee and Josh Duhamel.
The 13-episode series is coming this autumn to Adult Swim in the USA and Crunchyroll online. In the UK, expect it to arrive on Channel 4 or E4, following the broadcaster’s deal to become the exclusive of Adult Swim, including shows such as Rick and Morty, Harley Quinn and Primeval.
In the meantime, here’s the trailer – or read on below for the full Comic-Con panel.
