Toni Collette to star in Netflix’s Unbelievable
26th June 2018
Toni Collette will star in Netflix’s new original series, Unbelievable.
Based on An Unbelievable Story of Rape, a Pulitzer Prize-winning article by The Marshall Project and ProPublica, the series is adapted by the writer of Erin Brockovich, Susannah Grant. Grant, who will act as showrunner, is co-writing the series with Michael Chabon (John Carter) and Ayelet Waldman (Applebaum), with all three credited as exec producers, alongside Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly (Masters of Sex, Elementary) and Katie Couric.
The trio were each pursuing the rights to the case individually, before joining forces for the project, which Netflix picked up last year with an eight-episode order.
The drama follows the true story of Marie, a teenager who was charged with lying about being raped, and the ensuing investigation into the case by two female detectives. Toni Collette and Merritt Wever will play the detectives whose lives become intertwined in their mutual pursuit of a possible serial rapist. They will be joined by Kaitlyn Dever, who was also cast this week.
Lisa Cholodenko will direct the first three episodes, with no official word on a release date yet.
Unbelievable: Netflix orders new series from Erin Brockovich writer
25th January 2018
Netflix has ordered a new series from the writer of Erin Brockovich, Susannah Grant.
The series is based on The Marshall Project and ProPublica Pulitzer Prize-winning article, An Unbelievable Story of Rape – written by T. Christian Miller and Ken Armstrong – and the subsequent radio episode from This American Life about the same case. It follows the true story of Marie, a teenager who was charged with lying about being raped, and the ensuing investigation into the case by two female detectives.
It is co-written by Grant, Michael Chabon (John Carter) and Ayelet Waldman (Applebaum), with the Brockovich scribe serving as showrunner. All three will also exec produce, alongside Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly (Masters of Sex, Elementary) and Katie Couric.
Timberman and Beverly and Couric were each pursuing the rights to the case individually, reports Deadline, before joining forces. The result marks a reunion for Timberman, Beverly and Grant, as well as with producers CBS Studios, where she worked on the drama A Gifted Man.
Netflix has ordered eight episodes of the show, the third programme to be made by CBS Studios for the streaming giant, following American Vandal and upcoming original series Insatiable.
