Voltron: Legendary Defender will end with Season 8, its creators announced at Comic-Con this weekend, while unveiling a trailer for its seventh and penultimate season.
Netflix’s anime reboot sees five unsuspecting teenagers – Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Shiro – transported from Earth into the middle of a sprawling intergalactic war. There, they become pilots for five robotic lions in the battle to protect the universe from evil, uniting to Only through the true power of teamwork can they unite to form the mighty warrior known as Voltron.
The show has only been going for a few short years, but over its six existing seasons (some shorter than others), it’s grown from unexpected revival to one of Netflix’s leading animations, hailed by us as “the best thing to happen to cartoons since The Legend of Korra”.
“Fast pacing, stunning visuals and moving character arcs makes Voltron’s sixth season one of the TV highlights of the year,” we wrote in our review.
Now, it’s only a matter of time until the series wraps up entirely. Before then, though, there’s a seventh season to enjoy, and it picks up after the show has wrapped up its main story arc. With Lotor defeated and Shiro recovered, the Paladins are finally able to set a course for Earth. After a long and perilous journey, they discover that their home planet is not how they left it.
Season 7 will also give us a look back at the time before the Kerberos mission, which marked the beginning of Voltron: Legendary Defender, while showrunner Lauren Montgomery revealed that we will also meet Adam, Shiro’s significant other.
I wanted to hang back this morning and let #Shiro's moment be its own. That being said, I'm overwhelmed by the amazingly positive response, and both honored and proud to be a part of something so important. #Voltron
