Trailer: Tramps heads from Toronto to Netflix

Tramps is the latest Netflix original to swoop straight from the festival circuit to your living room – and the new trailer for the film makes it easy to see why.
The heist romance, directed and written by Adam Leon, stars Callum Turner as Danny, an aspiring chef whose hustler brother asks him to complete a job for him. It all seems simple enough: meet a driver with a briefcase, proceed to a rendezvous spot and exchange one briefcase for another. But Danny swaps the wrong bag, sending him and the driver Ellie (Van Patten – Noah Baumbach’s The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected)) on a two-day odyssey through the boroughs and suburbs of New York City.
The film was produced by Joshua Astrachan, David Kaplan, Andrea Roa and Jamund Washington and premiered last year at the Toronto International Film Festival. Screening in the contemporary world cinema strand, it drew immediate interest from Sony Pictures Classic and The Orchard, as well as A24. Netflix, though, trumped them all with a deal THR estimated at around $2 million.
Tramps’ release this month follows recent negative comments from Sony about Netflix, as the streaming service continues to disrupt the movie industry and spark debate about changing the established theatrical window that governs cinema and DVD distribution. Netflix, meanwhile, also picked up Barack Obama drama Barry at the festival, alongside concert movie Justin Timberlake and The Tennessee Kids.
“They had come to the table very enthusiastic, and very aggressive, and they’re able to move with the kind of freedom that a lot of theatrical distributors, even notable independent ones, no longer have,” Leon told the New York Times.
“For this movie, I really wanted a kind of classical Hollywood romance in terms of beats and structure but also to do it in a way that felt modern and genuine,” added Leon. “Certainly I was thinking of It Happened One Night, and also movies where the characters are thrown together for a compressed amount of time — Broadway Danny Rose and, even though it’s not a romance, Midnight Run.”
Tramps is released on Netflix worldwide on Friday 21st April. Here’s the trailer – or, for more on what’s coming soon to Netflix UK in April, click here.
Tramps is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
