Mood, the new series from triple threat actor, writer and singer-songwriter Nicôle Lecky, will make its BBC Three debut this week, and a new trailer gives us a
first look at what to expect.
The six-part drama – featuring an original soundtrack performed by Lecky herself – follows the inimitable and irrepressible Sasha (Lecky), a 25-year-old wannabe singer and rapper. Sasha wants to be a major recording artist but right now she’s a bedroom artist: spending her days smoking weed, avoiding her mum (Jessica Hynes – Years and Years, Shaun of the Dead), her stepdad (Paul Kaye – Game of Thrones) and sister Megan (Mia Jenkins –Hanna), while obsessing over her ex-boyfriend Anton (Jordan Duvigneau – My Mum Tracy Beaker) on Instagram.
We join her as she’s kicked out of her family home and forced to fend for herself. She finds herself sofa-surfing with local dealer Saleem (newcomer Mohammed Dalmar) until she moves in with enigmatic party girl Carly (Lara Peake – Brave New World), who introduces her to the exciting world of social media influencing. But as the gap between her new online presence and her original dream of being a singer continues to widen, Sasha finds herself struggling to escape a world that is more complex and darker than she could have imagined, while run-ning away from her past. Will she have the strength to find her voice?
Directed by Dawn Shadforth and Stroma Cairns, the series is told in part through the songs that Sasha creates. Also featured in the cast are Flo Wilson (Death In Paradise), Jorden Myrie (Stephen), Jason York (Sliced), Chantelle Alle (Vera, We Are Lady Parts) and Ebony Aboagye (The Lost Girls).
Taking inspiration from how young women navigate social media today, Lecky was drawn to exploring the thin line between liberation and exploitation that exists online and in real life. Through the fictional character of Sasha, Mood exposes the dark underbelly of a complex world, which many young women with big dreams and empty pockets aspire to be part of.
The series premieres at 10.05pm on BBC Three on 1st March, with all episodes available at once on BBC iPlayer. Here’s the trailer:
