Netflix has cancelled its plans to adapt The Magic Order as a series.
The first comic book published by Netflix, after its acquisition of Millarworld, The Magic Order follows five families of magicians sworn to protect our world for generations, who must battle an enemy who’s picking them off one by one. By day, they live among us as our neighbours, friends and co-workers, but by night, they are the sorcerers, magicians and wizards that protect us from the unseen forces of darkness – unless the darkness gets them first.
Created by Millar and illustrated by Marvel artist Olivier Coipel, the comic book was a hit when it launched, and it wasn’t long until Netflix confirmed that it would be adapting the comic book for the screen, with James Wan (Aquaman) directing and Lindsey Beer (Chaos Walking, Sierra Burgess is a Loser) serving as writer and showrunner.
Now, Netflix has decided to scrap The Magic Order altogether. The decision comes as the project was still being written ahead of planned 2021 production – and as Netflix continues to weight up the complications and costs of resuming or beginning production on original content during the coronavirus pandemic. reports that while the project as it stands is dead in the water, there’s still interest at Netflix in revisiting a screen adaptation in the future.
It joined a number of other Millar properties being adapted for the screen by Netflix, including Jupiter’s Legacy and American Jesus, and, as feature films, Empress, Huck and Sharkey The Bounty Hunter. The rest of the projects are still in the pipeline, with Jupiter’s Legacy expected to drop in 2021.

Netflix is looking to bring some magic to the comic book world with the release of its first comic from Mark Millar.
The idea of the streaming service publishing something printed might some bizarre, but it marks the beginning of a new era for the company, after it acquired Millarworld this year. The deal allows Netflix to tap into Mark Millar’s substantial and popular IP, giving the media platform a whole universe of characters and worlds to adapt into franchises and series.
The first comic book published under Netflix’s Millarworld will be The Magic Order. Written by Millar, the comic will be six issues long and the first will be released in Spring 2018. The Magic Order will be available for sale in print format through comic stores and other retail outlets and will also be available for digital purchase.
Magic meets the mob in The Magic Order, as five families of magicians sworn to protect our world for generations must battle an enemy who’s picking them off one by one. By day, they live among us as our neighbors, friends and co-workers, but by night, they are the sorcerers, magicians and wizards that protect us from the unseen forces of darkness… unless the darkness gets them first.
“We wanted to make a splash with our first book for Netflix and this is it. I love dark fantasy and there’s an enormous gap in the market for something like this,” says Millar, President and Chief Creative Officer of Millarworld, now a subsidiary of Netflix.
Marvel superstar Olivier Coipel (Thor, The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man) has been selected as artist for the first volume.
“Netflix hiring Olivier has also made me the happiest guy alive,” adds Millar. “I’ve been after him for almost ten years so to finally have our names in the same book is an absolute honour.”
