Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey to star in HBO’s The Last of Us
12th February 2021
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey will star in HBO’s The Last of Us.
Developed by Naughty Dog, the hit video game takes place 20 years after modern civilisation has collapsed. Joel is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of a quarantine show, but what starts as a small job for the tough survivor becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they traverse across the US and depend on each other for survival. HBO announced that a series based on the game was in the works last year, with Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin attached to write and exec-produce – with the game’s creative director Neil Druckmann also exec-producing.
Now, the project has found its lead duo, with Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey both boarding the project as Joel and Ellie. Ramsey became a breakout fan favourite in the fantasy epic, after portraying Lyanna Mormont. Pascal, who also starred in Game of Thrones, has gone on to take the lead in the hit Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian.
The project is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions, with Beanpole director Kantemir Balagov reported tapped to direct the pilot episode.
The Last of Us series in the works at HBO
5th March 2020
A new series based on The Last of Us is in the works at HBO.
The cable giant has made no secret of its push to find its next hit in the aftermath of Game of Thrones, from Westworld’s swift renewal for a third season to a new prequel series based on George RR Martin’s novels. Now, while Netflix is enjoying a huge hit with its take on The Witcher, HBO is turning to PlayStation game The Last of Us, which has sold more than 20 million copies since its 2013 release.
Developed by Naughty Dog, The Last of Us takes place 20 years after modern civilisation has collapsed. Joel is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie out of a quarantine show, but what starts as a small job for the tough survivor becomes a brutal, heartbreaking journey, as they traverse across the US and depend on each other for survival.
Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin is attached to write and exec-produce the project, with Neil Druckmann, the original writer of the game, also on board. Carolyn Strauss and Evan Wells, president of Naughty Dog, will exec-produce too.
The result is the first TV series from PlayStation Productions, which is co-producing with Sony Pictures Television.
“Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus,” said Mazin in a statement today. “Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honoured to do it in partnership with Neil.”
The TV show will cover the game’s events, but also potentially involve content from the upcoming sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which arrives on PlayStation consoles this May.
“This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for us to partner with Craig, Neil, Carolyn and the teams at Sony, Naughty Dog and PlayStation to bring the virtual world of this acclaimed game to life,” said Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming.
Indeed, Mazin is something of a golden goose for HBO, having bagged two Golden Globes and 10 Emmys for his limited series Chernobyl.
“From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us,” Druckmann commented. “With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show. I’m beyond excited to collaborate with them.”
