The Crown wins Best Drama as Brits reign at Golden Globes
David Farnor | On 09, Jan 2017
Netflix’s The Crown ruled at the Golden Globes this year, winning the big TV prize for Best Drama Series. The royal epic, which swept up the nation last year, also bagged Best Actress for Claire Foy, who plays Queen Elizabeth in the decades-spanning biopic.
The win marked Netflix’s first ever Best Series win at the Globes, a riposte to rival Amazon, which has taken home the Best Comedy Series prize for the last year’s in a row, thanks to Transparent and Mozart in the Jungle. This year, Amazon looked set for another sweep, with five nominations, including nods for Gael Garcia Bernal (Mozart) and Jeffrey Tambor (Transparent). While FX’s Atlanta beat it both to Best Comedy Series and Best Actor in a Comedy (Donald Glover), though, Amazon did win Best Actor in a Drama, with Billy Bob Thornton’s sensational turn in legal thriller Goliath fending off competition from Netflix’s Better Call Saul.
It was a night for newcomers, with Tracee Ellis Ross in Black-ish winning Best Actress in a Comedy Series and Sarah Paulson winning Best Actress in a Limited Series with FX’s The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. While the O.J. Simpson drama was a huge hit – FX had nine nominations in total, second only to HBO’s 14 – it was ultimately trumped by another Brit: BBC’s The Night Manager. Co-produced with AMC, the John Le Carre limited series not only won Best Actor for Tim Hiddleston but also Best Supporting Actress for Olivia Colman and Best Supporting Actor for Tom Hiddleston.
On the big screen, there were fewer surprises, as La La Land won every single category it was nominated in: a record-breaking seven Globes, including Best Musical or Comedy, Best Actor for Ryan Gosling, Best Actress for Emma Stone and Best Director for Damien Chazelle. Powerful indie drama Moonlight, the other contender for awards glory this year, won Best Drama, with Luke Cage and House of Cards star Mahershala Ali missing out on Best Supporting Actor to Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Nocturnal Animals.
Viola Davis finally took home a Golden Globe for Fences, after four previous nominations at the awards, while Elle enjoyed a double win for both Best Foreign Language Film and Best Actress Isabelle Huppert. Amazon, meanwhile, had the last laugh over Netflix, with Casey Affleck winning Best Actor for Amazon original film Manchester by the Sea.
With The Crown’s double win and The Night Manager’s triple success, though, the Brits were the ones reigning supreme in La La Land last night.
