The Aristocats is the latest animated Disney classic set to get the live-action treatment for Disney+.
From The Lady and the Tramp to Pinocchio, the House of Mouse has made no secret of its plans to work through its classic catalogue and update them for modern audiences, and the launch of Disney’s subscription streaming service has provided an ideal way to bring those films to an in-built audience of fans. Now, The Aristocats is being readied for a new remake, with Peter Rabbit and Easy A director Will Gluck at the helm.
Keith Bunin, who penned Pixar’s Onward, will co-write the script with Gluck, who will produce via his Olive Bridge Entertainment banner.
The original 1970 film, for those who aren’t in the know, is set in Paris and follows a family of felines – Duchess and her three kittens, Marie, Berlioz and Toulouse – who are set to inherit a fortune from their wealthy owner. But when the butler catches wind that they’ll get the family inheritance rather than him, he kidnaps them and dumps them in the lake, leaving them to have to team up with O’Malley the alley cat to find their way home.
Variety reports that the live-action remake is in “early development”. Whether or not it will feature the musical number Ev’rybody Wants to Be a Cat is yet to be confirmed.
