David Farnor | On 21, Jun 2021
Whether you’re following the Euros or not, there’s one thing we can all agree on when it comes to football: Ted Lasso is the best.
Since its debut in August 2020, the Apple TV+ has won over hearts and minds of football and non-football fans alike, thanks to its die-hard optimism. It stars Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso, an American football coach hired to manage a British soccer team – despite having no experience. But what he lacks in knowledge, he makes up for with optimism, underdog determination… and biscuits. The widely acclaimed series also stars Hannah Waddingham, Brendan Hunt, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster and Nick Mohammed. Sarah Niles will also join the cast for Season 2 as Sharon, a sports psychologist who has been brought in to work with AFC Richmond.
You can see what happens from Friday 23rd July, when the 12-episode season premieres with two episodes – followed by new episodes arriving weekly on Fridays.
Here’s the new trailer:

Ted Lasso will return to Apple TV+ this summer, with Season 2 scoring a July release date.
The series stars Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso, a small-time American college football coach from Kansas hired to coach a Premier League team despite having no experience coaching the English game. Since its debut in August 2020, the show has built up a strong fanbase on both sides of the Atlantic, earning Sudeikis a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe Award in the Best Comedy Actor category. The series also landed two Writers Guild Awards for Best New Series and Best Comedy Series, nominations from the Producers Guild of America for Comedy Series, as well as honours from many other guild and critics groups.
“Jason Sudeikis is hugely charming as a clueless football manager in this delightful, optimistic TV gem,” we wrote in our review last summer, which called it the “nicest show of the year”.
The series was developed by Sudeikis, Bill Lawrence, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelly, and is based on the pre-existing format and characters from NBC Sports. Already renewed for a third season, the show co-stars Hannah Waddingham, Jeremy Swift, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Phil Dunster and Nick Mohammed star. Ted Lasso: Jason Sudeikis and Bill Lawrence team up for Apple TV+ comedy
19th October 2019
Jason Sudeikis and Bill Lawrence are teaming up for Ted Lasso, a new comedy for Apple TV+.
As the online giant prepares to launch its new streaming service on 1st November, it is steadily ramping up its commissions to prepare for repeated waves of new content after its initial line-up. On the comedy side of things, that means a formal green light to Ted Lasso, a comedy starring, co-written and executive produced by Jason Sudeikis.
He originated the character, a football coach, for NBC Sports several years ago. Since then, Sudeikis has gone on to star in a number of feature films such as We’re the Millers and Horrible Bosses, but is far from a stranger of the small screen: he had a nine-season run on Saturday Night Live up until 2013.
Another TV comedy veteran, Bill Lawrence (Scrubs), has co-written the series, which Deadline reports has been in the works at Apple TV+ for a year. It will see Sudeikis reprise his character of Ted, an idealistic, clueless US football coach who is hired to manage an English football club, despite having no experience of “soccer” at all. Sudeikis will be joined on screen by Brendan Hunt (Bless This Mess) as Coach Beard.
Ted Lasso is produced by Lawrence’s Doozer Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. Sudeikis executive produces with Lawrence and Doozer’s Jeff Ingold.
