Oppenheimer, Poor Things, Killers of the Flower Moon lead 2024 Oscars nominations
David Farnor | On 23, Jan 2024
The nominees for the 2024 Oscars have been announced, and Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon are leading the way – closely followed by Barbie.
Barbenheimer, the box office sensation of last summer, has remained a phenomenon all the way through awards season, although Christopher Nolan’s biopic has ultimately jumped ahead, with Oscar nods for Best Picture, Director, Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actress (Emily Blunt), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr), Adapted Screenplay and more.
While Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is also up for Best Picture, there’s a surprise lack of recognition for Gerwig as a director and Margot Robbie as a leading actress, despite the film also picking up nods for Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Supporting Actress (America Ferrara), Adapted Screenplay and two Original Song nods (I’m Just Ken and What Was I Made For?).
The film with the most nominations is Oppenheimer on 13, followed by Poor Things (11), Killers of the Flower Moon (10) and Barbie (8).
Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon is making history with its nomination for Lily Gladstone as Best Actress, the first Indigenous actress to potentially win in the category. However, there’s no nomination for her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio, although the film is also up for Best Picture, Director and Score.
Other notable contenders include Justine Triet’s Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of the Fall and Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, both up for Best Director and Picture. With some surprise nominees including Actress and Supporting Actress for Annette Bening and Jodie Foster in Nyad, Netflix’s total of nominations is 18, ahead of Apple on 13. Amazon was notably snubbed for its high-profile original Saltburn, while Disney continues to benefit from its multi-armed reach, with 13 for Searchlight and 5 for Walt Disney.
The winners of the 2024 Oscars will be announced on Sunday 10th March, with Jimmy Kimmel doing the presenting. Read on for the full list:
