Trailer: Code 404 Season 2 set for September release
James R | On 06, Aug 2021
Code 404 will return to Sky this September and a new trailer gives us a first look at Season 2.
The comedy about a detective duo and an experimental A.I. project stars Stephen Graham and Daniel Mays as a cop and his partner, who is brought back from the dead as a super-charged crime-fighting machine.
With Anna Maxwell Martin also in the case, the show was a breakout hit last year, launching on Sky One on 29th April with a cumulative seven-day audience of 1.9m viewers for the opening episode – Sky’s biggest comedy launch in eight years. The show was also Sky’s fastest binged original comedy box set ever, with over 360,000 viewers watching the whole six-episode series before Episode 2 aired on linear television.
“Daniel Mays and Stephen Graham are laugh-out-loud funny in this surprising and silly cop comedy,” we wrote in our review of Season 1.
Written by Daniel Peak and directed by Al Campbell, the series was swiftly renewed for a second run. Season 2 will see the crime fighting duo of the future, DI Carver (Stephen Graham) and his AI-driven partner DI Major (Daniel Mays), reunite. Unfortunately, there’s still a few bugs to patch out. The resurrected DI Major has finally reached his potential as the top cop in the SIU, but it has come at a price. At last realising that his best friend had shacked up with his wife Kelly (Anna Maxwell Martin) while he was “away” (and a bit before), their partnership is over, and the pair go their own ways.
But when a 20-year old cold case is reopened, the pair find themselves back together and thrown into the action. With an impending divorce, the return of his long-time absentee dad, and danger around every corner, the pressure seems to be getting to Major and he starts exhibiting strange behavioural glitches. However, much to Carver’s concern, the problems are more serious than a typical reboot can solve, and our cyborg hero may be looking at terminal failure.
New cast members for Season 2 include Meera Syal as Elizabeth Churchland and Clive Russell as Clifford Major. Returning alongside Graham, Mays and Martin are Michelle Greenidge (Not Judy), Rosie Cavaliero (Dennett), Richard Gadd (Cleasby) and Amanda Payton (Parfit).
Season 2 will premiere on Sky Comedy and NOW on 1st September, with all episodes available at once on demand. Here’s the trailer:

Detective Inspectors DI John Major (Mays) and DI Roy Carver (Graham) are the top crime fighting duo in the Unit. But when an undercover sting goes horribly wrong, Major is gunned down on the job and killed. Full of guilt and regret about Major’s untimely death, Roy turns to the only person who understands him, John’s wife, Kelly (Maxwell Martin). However, John gets a reboot. Stephen Graham and Daniel Mays to star in Sky One’s Code 404
14th January 2019
Stephen Graham and Daniel Mays will star in Code 404, a new Sky One series.
Set in the in the Special Investigation Unit at the London Met, the six-part comedy is set in the near future and will revolve around two Detective Inspectors, DI John Major (Daniel Mays) and DI Roy Carver (Stephen Graham), who are the top crime fighting duo in the Unit. But when an undercover sting goes horribly wrong, Major is gunned down on the job and killed.
How will the SIU function without Major? It doesn’t have to. As an ‘asset’ considered too valuable to lose, Major’s body is fast-tracked into an experimental Artifical Intelligence project to bring him back from the dead. The only problem is, Major 2.0 may look like and sound like the original, but something has been lost in translation. His arrogant demeanour and gung-ho approach remain but his crimefighting instincts have completely deserted him. Somehow, Major’s error-strewn hunches and Carver’s scrambling to make good allows them to just about scrape by.
Co-produced by Water & Power Productions and Kudos, part of the Endemol Shine Group, Code 404 is directed by Al Campbell and written by Daniel Peak. Executive producers include Tom Miller and Sam Myer for Water & Power Productions, Phil Temple and Diederick Santer for Kudos and Morwenna Gordon for Sky.
Jon Mountague, Head of Comedy, Sky Entertainment, says: “What a coup, Stephen Graham and Daniel Mays are the dream team – the perfect Carver and Major. Danny Peak’s scripts are endlessly hilarious and very, very arresting. Can’t wait.”
Code 404 will air on Sky One and streaming service NOW in 2020. Filming begins in March 2019.
