Netflix cancels She’s Gotta Have It after Season 2
James R | On 18, Jul 2019
Netflix has cancelled She’s Gotta Have It after two seasons.
The series, based on the very first Spike Lee film of the same time, stars DeWanda Wise (Shots Fired) as Nola, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late 20s, who is struggling to define herself and divide her time among her friends, her Job and her three lovers: Greer Childs, played by Cleo Anthony (Divergent), Jamie Overstreet, played by Lyriq Bent (The Book of Negroes), and Mars Blackmon, played by Hamilton’s Anthony Ramos.
“[Lee’s] found himself a powerhouse lead in Wise and she proves herself beyond a shadow of a doubt,” we wrote in ourglowing review of Season 1. “‘Who is she?’ demands Jamie’s (quasi-ex) wife. Why, she’s Nola Darling, and she’s stolen all of our hearts. Netflix’s filmmaker freedom has never felt quite so good. She’s Gotta Have It is all Spike Lee and it’s glorious.”
Season 2 of the show premiered back in May, but within a couple of months of that sophomore debut, Netflix has now confirmed that it has not renewed the programme for a third run.
“Spike Lee is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and we’re thrilled he brought the series She’s Gotta Have It to Netflix. While this is our last season, we’re very proud that it will be on our service for years to come, and excited to be working with Spike on his upcoming Netflix film Da 5 Bloods,” Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos told THR in a statement.
The news arrives after some controversy surrounded Season 2, with John Boyega criticising the series for a scene in which the lead character told a British black actor that they should not portray black Americans on screen. Boyega’s comment sparked a backlash against the show on social media. It also arrives as Netflix increasingly cancels series after a short number of seasons, including Santa Clarita Diet, Friends from College, American Vandal and One Day at a Time (the latter has since been renewed by Pop TV).
Netflix has recently spoken about its decision-making process when renewing or axing a show, with the basic calculation comparing how much viewing they get for what the production costs, whether it’s reaching different audiences, gaining critical acclaim or “doing something for us as a business that we like”.
Spike Lee is understood to be shopping the show around to other potential homes, and will continue his relationship with Netflix through his upcoming movie for the streamer, Da 5 Bloods.

She’s Gotta Have It’s DeWanda Wise drops out of Captain Marvel
19th March 2018
She’s Gotta Have It star DeWanda Wise has dropped out of the Captain Marvel movie, due to scheduling conflicts with the Netflix series.
The actress, who starred in Shots Fired, impressed with a star-making turn in Spike Lee’s Netflix series.
In January, it was little surprise that Marvel had pounced on the star for its upcoming Captain Marvel movie. In what would have been her first major role, she was thought to be playing Monica Rambeau, one of the heroes who have carried the title Captain Marvel in the original comic books, and has also gone by the names Photon, Pulsar and Spectrum at various points in the comics history.
Now, however, she has had to drop out of the movie due to conflicts with the Netflix series, which is in production on Season 2.
“It’s true,” Wise wrote on Instagram. “I will no longer be in Captain Marvel because the schedule conflicts with season 2 of She’s Gotta Have It.”
Marvel, meanwhile, has acted quickly to find a replacement, with THR reporting that Britain’s own Leshanda Lynch has been cast on the role.
“Last week I felt pretty devastated – this week is leaps and bounds better,” Wise added. “You see, if you had told me that this would happen any year prior to 2016, I would have doubled over with laughter. But here we are—at a moment in culture where scheduling conflicts are rapidly replacing lack of options, and I feel absolutely blessed to be here.”

6th November 2016
Chyna Layne and Ilfenesh Hadera are the latest two cast members to join Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It series.
The contemporary update of the director’s 1986 indie film, which was announced at the end of the summer, stars DeWanda Wise as Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based 20-something struggling to find the time to follow her job, keep up with her friends, find herself and spend time with her lovers (played by Lyriq Bent, Cleo Anthony and Anthony Ramos).
With Wise recently cast in the lead, Layne and Hadera are the latest two to join the growing suporting ensemble. Her casting marks a reunion for Spike Lee and the actress: she has worked with the director on both Chi-Raq and Oldboy.
DeWanda Wise will take the lead in She’s Gotta Have It series
15th October 2016
DeWanda Wise will take the lead in Spike Lee’s TV adaptation of She’s Gotta Have It.
Netflix’s 10-episode series, based on Lee’s 1986 indie classic, follows Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her 20s struggling to find herself, let alone the time for her job, friends and three lovers.
Since the project was announced, the cast has already begun to impress, with Hamilton’s Anthony Ramos playing one of Nola’s lovers, Mars, described as “da original b-boy sneakerhead Mars Blackmon”, who still wears Jordans but now is a social-media phenomenon.
Now, though, the show has found its main star, with DeWanda Wise taking on the iconic female part. It follows roles for the actress in WGN America’s Underground, Fox’s upcoming series Shots Fire.
Lee will direct all episodes of the series.
Hamilton’s Anthony Ramos cast in Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It series
30th September
Hamilton’s Anthony Ramos will star in Netflix’s TV series of Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It.
The show, which is directed and written by Lee, was announced by the streaming giant earlier this month. It will update the 1986 indie film as a contemporary tale, following Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her 20s struggling to find herself, let alone the time for her job, friends and three lovers.
Things don’t get much more contemporary than Hamilton. The smash hit Broadway musical has fired up audiences in America, with the show riding a wave of excitement to the UK, where it will debut in the West End next year. It is little surprise, then, that Ramos, who who originated the roles of John Laurens and Philip Hamilton, should be snapped up by Netflix for one of She’s Gotta Have It’s male leads.
He will play Mars, portrayed in the movie by Lee, described as “da original b-boy sneakerhead Mars Blackmon”, who still wears Jordans but now is a social-media phenomenon.
This is the first regular TV gig for the 24-year-old actor, notes Deadline.
