Netflix cancels Space Force
David Farnor | On 30, Apr 2022
Netflix has cancelled Space Force after two seasons.
Created by The Office’s Greg Daniels, the comedy stars Steve Carell as four-star general Mark R Naird, a decorated pilot with dreams of running the Air Force who is thrown for a loop when he finds himself tapped to lead the newly formed sixth branch of the US Armed Forces: Space Force. Skeptical but dedicated, Mark uproots his family and moves to a remote base in Colorado where he and a colourful team of scientists and “Spacemen” are tasked by the White House with getting American boots on the moon (again) in a hurry and achieving total space dominance.
Co-starring John Malkovich and Ben Schwartz, the series returned for a second season in February, when it briefly appeared in the streamer’s 10 most-watched shows but seemed not to make a splash. Now, Netflix has officially decided not to renew the show for a third voyage.
The move comes as the company increasingly considers viewership numbers and completion rates against budgets when weighing whether to renew a project. It also comes as Netflix is facing a downturn in subscribers for the first time in a decade, with a further 2 million subscribers forecast to be lost in the coming three months.
Daniels, however, is still working with Netflix on a number of other projects, including an adaptation of card game Exploding Kittens and Bad Crimes.

“This space sitcom suffers from a slow take-off,” we wrote in our review of Season 1, which touched down in May 2020.
Nonetheless, Netflix greenlit a second chapter and now, almost two years later, that sophomore run is upon us. Season 2 will follow General Naird and his underdog team as they face growing pressure under a new presidential administration. There are also changes behind the scenes, with Norm Hiscock (Parks & Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) joining Daniels as co-showrunner. What will those changes will mean for Season 2? We won’t have to wait long to find out, with all seven episodes touching down on 18th February.

Watch: Trailer lands for Netflix’s Space Force
5th May 2020
“Netflix had this premise that they thought might make a funny show — the idea made everybody laugh in a meeting, an idea of a show about the origins of a fictitious Space Force. I heard about the idea through my agent, and Netflix pitched the show to me, and then I pitched the show to Greg, and we all had the same reaction to it. There was no show, there was no idea aside from the title. Netflix asked, “Do you want to do a show called Space Force?” And I pretty much immediately said, “Well yeah, sure. That sounds great.” And then I called Greg, and I said, “Hey, you want to do a show called Space Force?” And he said, “Yeah, that sounds good. Let’s do it.” And it was really based on nothing.”
That’s Steve Carell explaining the origins of new Netflix comedy Space Force, and a new trailer gives us a first look at the series in action.
Carell plays four-star general Mark R. Naird, a decorated pilot with dreams of running the Air Force who is thrown for a loop when he finds himself tapped to lead the newly formed sixth branch of the US Armed Forces: Space Force. Skeptical but dedicated, Mark uproots his family and moves to a remote base in Colorado where he and a coloirful team of scientists and “Spacemen” are tasked by the White House with getting American boots on the moon (again) in a hurry and achieving total space dominance.
Co-created by Greg Daniels (The Office), the workplace comedy co-stars John Malkovich, Lisa Kudrow, Diana Silvers, Tawny Newsome, Ben Schwartz, Jimmy O. Yang, Alex Sparrow and Don Lake. It touches down on 29th May. Here’s the trailer:

Noah Emmerich signs up for Netflix’s Space Force
4th November 2019
Noah Emmerich is the latest recruit to sign up for Netflix’s Space Force.
The workplace comedy is centered around the people on Earth tasked with creating a sixth branch of the armed services… Space Force.
Steve Carell stars as Mark R. Naird, a General tapped by the White House to lead a new branch of the Armed Forces with the goal of putting American “Boots on the Moon” by 2024.
Carell co-created the series with Greg Daniels (The Office (U.S.); King of the Hill; Parks and Recreation). Daniels serves as showrunner and executive producer. Howard Klein/3Arts (The Office (U.S.); The Mindy Project; Parks and Recreation) also serves as executive producer. Paul King (Paddington, Paddington 2) will direct two episodes of Space Force, including the pilot.
That combination of talent has already attracted an impressive cast, including John Malkovich as Dr. Adrian Mallory, the arrogant Head Science Advisor, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation, House of Lies) as F. Tony Scarapiducci, a self-centered media consultant, Diana Silvers (Booksmart, MA) as Erin Naird, Mark’s daughter, and Tawny Newsome (Bajillion Dollar Propertie$, Brockmire) as Angela Ali, a helicopter pilot.
Emmerich (The Americans) will play Kick Grabaston, Chief of Staff of the US Air Force, Mark’s old boss and rival. He is one of a trio of recurring cast additions, along with Fred Willard (Modern Family) and Jessica St. Clair (Playing House).
Willard plays Fred Naird, Mark’s father, and St. Clair plays Kelly King, a forthright civilian contractor helping Mark build the new base in Colorado.
The 10-part series will launch on Netflix worldwide in 2020.
