Netflix is releasing The Trial of the Chicago 7 online for free this weekend.
Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, the film follows one of the most notorious trials in US history. In 1968, with the whole world watching, democracy refused to back down. What was intended to be a peaceful protest at the 1968 Democratic National Convention turned into a violent clash with police and the National Guard. The organizers of the protest — including Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Tom Hayden and Bobby Seale — were charged with conspiracy to incite a riot.
“This timely political drama turns a show trial into a witty cinematic circus,” we wrote in our review of the film, which stars Eddie Redmayne, Alex Sharp, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, John Carroll Lynch and Mark Rylance.
The verdict of the trial was announced on 18th February 1970 and so, to mark the anniversary, Netflix is making the film available on YouTube for free for 48 hours – from 8am on Friday 19th February (the equivalent of midnight in the US) until 8am on Sunday 21st February.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
