Exclusive: Scream TV series to premiere as “Netflix original” in the UK

Netflix has snapped up the rights to the Scream TV series, which will be released in the UK exclusively on the streaming service in October.
The show, which premiered in the US on 30th June 2015, was renewed for a second season by MTV on 29th July, but the series had yet to find a UK broadcaster. Now, VODzilla.co can reveal that the show will be released exclusively on Netflix on British soil as a “Netflix original”.
Update:
A spokesperson for the streaming company has told us that the show is not a Netflix original, but the series carries a Netflix original logo on its official page on in its opening credits. Indeed, while the show is not technically an original production by Netflix, the streaming giant has negotiated similar deals with a number of foreign series in the past, such as the US remake of The Returned, which is broadcast on A&E in America, and Between, which originated with Canadian TV network City. Both are branded as “Netflix original” shows in the UK and other countries. Netflix has also made similar deals for UK series to release in America under the company’s banner, including the BBC’s Peaky Blinders (through The Weinstein Company).
As well as the UK, Netflix has bought the rights to stream the Scream series in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Mexico, and France.
The deal comes hot on the heels of agreements for Jane the Virgin and Zoo, as well as Carlton Cuse’s new drama, Colony.
The rest of the story as originally published appears below.
The small-screen sequel to the classic horror franchise is based on the film series by Wes Craven and Kevin Williamso and created by Jill Blotevogel, Dan Dworkin and Jay Beattie. The show follows a cyber-bullying incident in Lakewood that goes viral, leading to a murder with chilling echoes of the past.
It stars Willa Fitzgerald as high school student Emma Duvall, Bex Taylor-Klus as Emma’s old best friend, Audrey, John Karna as horror movie nerd Noah, Connor Weil as Will, Emma’s ex-boyfriend, and Carlson Young as Brooke, Emma’s best friend. Amelia Rose Blaire co-stars as Piper Shaw, a podcaster who, not unlike Gale Weathers in the original 1996 film, comes to the town to investigate the murders.
All 10 episodes of Scream: Season 1 will premiere on Netflix UK on Thursday 1st October.
The show joins a number of other spooky new arrivals on Netflix UK just in time for Halloween, including What We Do in the Shadows, American Horror Story: Fraek Show, Residential Evil: Apocalypse, Stonehearst Asylum and Season 3 of Hemlock Grove.
