Ronald D Moore i heading to Disney+ to build several new products set in Disney’s Magic Kingdom.
The House of Mouse’s subscription service has enjoyed a strong start in the streaming arena, thanks to its focus on developing films and TV shows based around its most popular interlecctual property and franchises, from Star Wars spin-offs such as The Mandalorian to solo outings for Marvel superheroes, such as Loki and WandaVision. Now, it’s turning its gaze to its own Magic Kingdom, one of the five kingdoms in the Disney World theme park.
Moore, the Outlander and Battlestar Galactica veteran who has just dropped Season 2 of his alt-history sci-fi For All Mankind on Apple TV, is developing multiple TV projects under that broad remit, beginning with The Society of Explorers and Adventurers. The series is based on the fictional organisation of the same name that is part of Disney’s theme park lore – and the characters and lands of Disney World and Disney’s will all exist as part of the show in another reality.
Moore will reportedly work with the Disney Imagineering Team on other connected projects, resulting in a theme park universe that will be similar to the criss-crossing world of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Moore will oversee the franchise while Maril Davis and Ben McGinnis of Moore’s Tall Ship Productions are also attached.
This all comes as part of Moore’s multi-year overall deal with 20th Television, which was acquired by the Disney empire during recent the Disney/Fox merger. The project also follows a Swiss Family Robinson series in the works at Disney+, which Moore is also attached to alongside Jon M Chu.
