Revealed: Netflix’s most-binged TV series of 2018

As the end of the year approaches, everyone’s taking the time to look back and take stock of what’s come along in the last 12 months, whether it’s work, family, homes or relationships. For us, we’re mostly concerned with what we watched over the last 52 weeks. Well, Netflix, with its all-knowing, far-reaching, mildly creepy algorithm, knows what you did last 2018, and the streaming giant has released its official list of most-binged TV series of the year.
Analysing its oh-so-secretive viewing data, Netflix has ranked the shows with the highest average watch time per viewing session between January and the end of November. That doesn’t mean these are the most watched shows overall, just that these have the longest average time spent watching them in one go. And, because the stats are for the USA, they don’t quite sync up with Netflix UK.
Nonetheless, from true crime to hidden ghosts, there are series that certainly do ring true, with Making a Murderer’s much-anticipated return and horror sensation The Haunting of Hill House () both making the list, along with Anne with an E’s second season, the debut run of coming-of-age comedy On My Block, the controversy-sparking sophomore outing for 13 Reasons Why and maiden voyage for Insatiable, motoring series Fastest Car and Last Chance U’s latest instalment. Capping off the list is Season 6 of Orange Is the New Black.
It’s no surprise that almost all of them have been renewed for another season, as Netflix invests in its most engaging programmes, in terms of watch-time. One exception to that (at the moment) is Bodyguard, which is a BBC One drama picked up by Netflix for international distribution. The series has been an equally big hit on UK soil, though, with 10.4m viewers tuning in for its finale in September, making it the number one non-World Cup TV broadcast of the year, the biggest BBC drama since 2008 and, thanks to 7.3 million requests for its opening episode in September, the series with the biggest episode ever on BBC iPlayer.
Here’s Netflix’s TV binge top 10 for 2018:
1. On My Block
2. Making a Murderer: Part 2
