Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid will ride again, with Amazon reportedly closing a deal for a new series inspired by the Western.
Directed by George Roy Hill, the 1969 film is a Wild West classic, not only thanks to its script by William Goldman and music Burt Bacharach but also its star double-act of Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Based loosely on history, it follows Robert LeRoy Parker, aka Butch Cassidy, and Harry Longabaugh, aka the Sundance Kid, as they go on the run after a string on train robberies.
Now, Amazon is mounting a straight-to-series order for a series inspired by the movie, with cousins Kaz and Ryan Firpo, who wrote Marvel’s Eternals, penning the script. They will exec-produce alongside Joe and Anthony Russo, whose company AGBO has a string of films at Netflix and is already partnering Amazon Studios on series Grimjack, Citadel and Mastermind.
In front of the camera, meanwhile, will be a duo hoping to prove iconic in their own right: Regé-Jean Page and Glen Powell. Regé-Jean Page has shot to stardom thanks to his role in the first season of Bridgerton and recently appeared in Russo’s Netflix actioner The Gray Man, is expected to play Butch Cassidy. Powell, who clocked up roles in Hidden Figures, The Dark Knight Rises and Scream Queens before getting a lead role in Netflix’s rom-com Set It Up, recently soared in profile thanks to his role as “Hangman” in the hit sequel Top Gun: Maverick. He is expected to play the Sundance Kid.
Further details on the series aren’t known, but Deadline reports that it will be set “in an alternate America”.
