Ramy will return to STARZPLAY for Season 2 this August, with Mahershala Ali joining the cast.
The comedy series, which was acquired by STARZPLAY for the UK and other international territories, follows first-generation Egyptian-American Ramy Hassan (Ramy Youssef) who is on a spiritual journey in his politically-divided New Jersey neighborhood. Ramy brings a new perspective to the screen as it explores the challenges of what it’s like to be caught between a religious community who believes life is a moral test, and a millennial generation that doubts an afterlife even exists.
“Deftly balancing the big and the small, it’s a tiny gem of a TV show that deserves to be a big hit,” we wrote in our review of Season 1.
Season 2 sees Ramy delve further into his spiritual journey, finding a new Muslim community and embracing a deeper commitment to his faith. Creator/writer/producer Ramy Youssef returns as the eponymous character, this time under the guidance of a new sheik, played by Mahershala Ali. The series also features Mohammed Amer, Hiam Abbass, Amr Waked, May Calamawy, Dave Merheje, Laith Nakli and Steve Way.
Earlier this year, creator and star Ramy Yousseff received a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, and more recently, the show received a Peabody Award for its “masterful weaponization of the tension between faith and secularism, East and West, and men and women”.
Season 2 premieres on 30th August, with all 10 episodes available at once.
