The comedy duo Shirley & Shirley have released their first stand-up special on comedy streaming platform NextUp. The show was recorded while both performers were heavily pregnant – both gave birth less than three months later.
In this 60-minute live recording, Shirley & Shirley present their unique brand of black comedy sketches, featuring clowning, improv and characters such as Soupçon Sally and a morose sex robot.
The duo, who share a birthday, and both attended Blackheath High School, were in their 3rd trimesters when the show was recorded, and they have since had their baby boys 13 days apart. The show, titled Marriage Material, explores Pascale’s baby’s conception as one half of a hetrosexual couple, versus Joanna’s within a same sex couple.
The stand-up comedy special is now available to stream exclusively on NextUp – a subscription video on-demand platform featuring over 100 shows from rising stars as well as household names. Acts include The Mash Report’s Rachel Parris, Ed Byrne, Richard Herring, and Laura Lexx. Subscription is £4.99 per month with a seven-day free trial.
Joanna says: “We are delighted to have this opportunity to platform a show that captures a very unique time in our lives: both in sequins and both up the duff. NextUp have made it possible for us to share with the world a show that we can never again perform.”
NextUp Co-Founder Sarah Henley says: “Two women, absolutely smashing their lives whilst heavily pregnant and bringing brilliantly dark comedy to the masses is exactly what NextUp thinks the world needs right now; we’re delighted to be launching this show.”
