Outlander Season 2 will air in the UK on 11th September, Amazon has announced.
The Golden Globe-nominated series, which is based upon Diana Gabaldon’s international best-selling novels, will return this autumn for another 13 episodes. Adapted from Voyager, the third of Outlander’s eight books, the season picks up right after Claire (Caitriona Balfe) travels through the stones to return to her life in 1948. Now pregnant with Jamie’s (Sam Heughan) child, she struggles with the fallout of her sudden reappearance and its effect on her marriage to her first husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies). Meanwhile, in the 18th century, Jamie suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as well as the loss of Claire. As the years pass, Jamie and Claire attempt to make a life apart from one another, each haunted by the memory of their lost love.
The programme was acquired exclusively by Amazon back in 2014, with episodes arriving on Amazon Prime Video in the UK within 24 hours of their US broadcast. The first episode will premiere on Monday 11th September, with new episodes then following weekly.
The release date arrives as Amazon also releases the official key art for Season 3, which illustrates a distant Claire and Jamieon opposite sides of the standing stone that once brought them together. The two are set in vastly different eras: Claire in the 1960’s, and Jamie in the 1700’s. The key art was shot by photographer Jason Bell.
The marathon third series production filmed across ten months in its home base in Scotland, followed by Cape Town, South Africa, to shoot pivotal sea voyage scenes on the former sets of the STARZ original series Black Sails. Fans will get a glimpse of what went into the making of the show at Comic-Con International: San Diego this summer, as the show once again returns with its own panel.

Outlander will return in September for Season 3
16th February 2017
Outlander will return in September for a third season, Amazon has announced.
Season 3 of the series based on Diana Gabaldon’s historical fantasy novels, produced by Sony Pictures Television, will consist of 13 episodes. Picking up events from Season 2, it’s adapted from Voyager, the third of eight books in Gabaldon’s series.
It sees Claire (Caitriona Balfe) travel through the stones to return to her life in 1948. As the years pass, Jamie and Claire attempt to make a life apart from one another, each haunted by the memory of the other. Separated by continents and centuries, Claire and Jamie must find their way back to each other. As always, adversity, mystery, and adventure await them on the path to reunion. And the question remains: When they find each other, will they be the same people who parted at the standing stones, all those years ago?
Steve Kent, Senior Executive Vice President, Programming, Sony Pictures Television says: “With the scope of the production and all of the intricate details that go into the Emmy-nominated sets and costumes, we had to make sure everything is kept to the high standard of the previous seasons and Diana Gabaldon’s beautiful story. We’re so proud of the incredible work that Ron and the Outlander team have done.”
Production and filming on the current season began in September 2016 and will wrap in June, after which Outlander will attend San Diego Comic Con, offering fans a chance to see some of what’s in store. Before then, though, the show is moving from its home base in Scotland to Cape Town, South Africa, to shoot pivotal sea voyage scenes for the final five episodes on the former sets of the STARZ original series Black Sails. Counting down the weeks until Outlander’s return? The good news is that Black Sails is also available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
