Oscars 2020: Parasite makes history and Netflix nabs double win
David Farnor | On 10, Feb 2020
Parasite made history at the 2020 Oscars last night, becoming the first non-English language film to win Best Picture.
Bong Joon-ho’s dark comedy took home a total of four awards, not only Best Picture but also Best Director, Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. The filmmaker won hearts at the ceremony and at home, as he spent the whole of his directing acceptance speech paying tribute to the other directors nominated.
1917, the other big contender for the evening, took home three Oscars, including Cinematography for Roger Deakins, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects, with Le Mans 66 (Ford v Ferrari) also dominating in the technical categories, including Film Editing and Sound Editing.
Other awards played it relatively safe, with Brad Pitt (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Renee Zellweger (Judy) and Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) all taking home acting prizes as expected, while Disney’s Toy Story 4 also saw off competition from Netflix’s Klaus and I Lost My Body to win Animated Feature. Netflix, meanwhile, converted its record 24 nominations (up from 17 in 2019) into just two wins: Laura Dern for Supporting Actress in Marriage Story and Documentary Feature for American Factory.
