With less than one month to go until Orange Is the New Black Season 2, Netflix is rolling out a whopping 17 posters for the show to go with the trailer.

“17 posters?” you cry. “That’s even more characters than in X-Men: Days of Future Past.”

But while that might smack of marketing overload, that’s exactly what makes Orange Is the New Black such a fantastic show.

Where the story of Piper Chapman being sent to prison could have been a painfully cliched comedy about a middle-class white woman having problems, Jenji Kohan’s adaptation of Piper Kerman’s memoir gives all of her cellmates their fair share of screentime, turning them from potential stereotypes to a strikingly diverse ensemble of fully-fleshed characters. The fact that they’re all women – without any big deal being made about it – only makes it more impressive.

So yes, there are 17 posters, but there are 17 people to go with them. Released today, the first batch features Sophia, Nicky, Lorna, Big Boo and Laura. We’ll be updating the page with the new ones as they’re released.

Season 2 of Orange is the New Black premieres exclusively on Netflix on Friday 6th June.
