Season 2 of Penny Dreadful is available to watch online in the UK from Tuesday 5th May.
What is Penny Dreadful? As the title suggests, it’s a Gothic horror series, the kind of thing you’d find in a cheap 19th century British paperback. The twist? It’s a combination of a load of them, from Frankenstein to Dracula. Think The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen – but with Josh Hartnett instead of Sean Connery.
The show, created by Gladiator and Skyfall’s John Logan, premiered last May on Sky Atlantic, when it frankly scared the bejesus out of us. Now, it’s back again for another run of 10 episodes.
Viewers will be able to stream the show live on Tuesday 5th May on NOW, Sky’s VOD service. An Entertainment Membership costs £6.99 a month with no contract and gives users access to other TV shows such as Game of Thrones Season 5, The Jinx and Arrow, which can all be watched live or on catch-up at any other time. (Episodes are removed after 30 days of their initial broadcast.)
Season 2 will see Vanessa (Eva Green) and Ethan (Josh Hartnett) form a deeper bond as the group, including Sir Malcolm (Timothy Dalton), Dr. Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway), and Sembene (Danny Sapani), unite to banish the evil forces that threaten to destroy them. Meanwhile, Dorian Gray (Reeve Carney), the Creature (Rory Kinnear) and Brona (Billie Piper) are all waging battles of their own.
Patti LuPone will guest star as a mysterious character of great importance in Vanessa’s past, while Helen McCrory will return as Evelyn Poole (a.k.a. Madame Kali), the seductive spiritualist who will pose a unique threat to our protagonists this season – along with Simon Russell Beale, who stole several scenes as eccentric Egyptologist Ferdinand Lyle.
Never seen Penny Dreadful? Season 1 is also available on NOW, so you can catch up ahead of the second season. (Our spoiler-free review of the first episode is here.)
