Orange Is the New Black leads 2014 Emmy nominations for comedy

Orange Is the New Black leads the comedy category in the 2014 Emmy nominations.
Jeji Kohan’s Netflix Original prison series has received 12 nominations in this year’s award race, including Best Comedy Series and three separate actress awards. Taylor Schilling is up for Best Actress, while Kate Mulgrew is in the running for Best Supporting Actress. Uzo Aduba and Laverne Cox are both competing for Best Guest Actress.
It’s a sign of just how rounded the programme’s ensemble cast is – not to mention the clout that Netflix’s show now have. This is only the second year that Netflix has entered heavy-weights into the race, but its online-only productions are at the top table once more, with House of Cards as well as Breaking Bad up for Outstanding Drama Series.
Game of Thrones and Fargo lead the pack overall, with 19 and 18 nominations respectively, including a nod for Martin Freeman as Lead Actor in a TV Miniseries or Movie. To win that, he’d have to beat Benedict Cumberbatch, who is also up for his role in Sherlock: His Last Vow, not to mention Fargo co-star Billy Bob Thornton.
The True Detective duo of Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are also squaring off against each other for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, against Mad Men’s Jon Hamm, The Newsroom’s Jeff Daniels, Breaking Bad’s Bryan Cranston and, yes, House of Cards’ Kevin Spacey.
Fans will be disappointed at the lack of Hannibal and Penny Dreadful – although worry not, Eva Green fans, the show isn’t eligible for this year’s Emmys – but the Orange Is the New Black cast will be smiling all the way to the stage. You can imagine Netflix doing the same. Netflix notched up 31 nominations this year, more than double its 14 earned last year. With the Internet TV service lining up a whole host of original shows for the coming 12 months, you wonder how much higher that figure will climb in 2015.
The winners will be announced on 25th August 2014. Full the full list of Emmy nominees, read on:
