In 2019, a scheme was exposed that revealed the lengths wealthy families would go to for admission into elite colleges. A man named Rick Singer persuaded his wealthy clients to cheat an educational system already designed to benefit the privileged – and now, Netflix is taking us beyond the celebrity-driven headlines to examine the scandal.
“Everything you’ve heard is true, but you haven’t heard everything” promises the documentary, which uses real conversations from FBI wiretaps to dives into the methods used by the scheme. Blending an innovative combination of interviews and narrative recreations of the wiretapped conversations between Singer and his clients, Operation Varsity Blues offers a rare glimpse into the enigmatic figure at heart of the scandal, which angered a nation already grappling with the effects of widespread inequality.
From Chris Smith and Jon Karmen, the filmmakers behind Fyre, and starring Matthew Modine as Rick Singer, Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal premieres on Netflix on 17th March. Here’s the trailer:
Operation Varsity Blues: The College Admissions Scandal is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
