Orange Is the New Black Season 3 will premiere on Netflix in June.
The comedy drama, created by Jenji Kohan, has become something of a smash hit over its first two seasons.
It follows Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling), a woman who is arrested for smuggling drug money for her ex-girlfriend, Alex (Laura Prepon), who is also behind bars. Their story is far from the only focus, though, as the series expands its horizons to include the back-story of virtually every single female inmate in there.
The most-watched original series on the service in 2013, the show has been popular not just with viewers but with the industry too. After notching up a Golden Globe nomination for Schilling in 2014, it received another this year, along with a Best Supporting Actress nod for Uzo Aduba, who plays besotted prisoner “Crazy Eyes”, and a nomination for Best TV Series – Comedy or Musical. At the 2015 Screen Actors Guild awards, it won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series for Aduba, plus the prize for Best Ensemble cast.
Netflix has made no secret of its love for the programme either. Prepon announced a third season last year, tweeting a picture of her and other characters as LEGO mini figures. Netflix confirmed the news – the second time in a row it has commissioned a new season of Orange Is the New Black before the current one had even been broadcast.
Now, it has confirmed the exact date of its arrival: Season 3 of Orange Is the New Black will premiere in the UK on Friday 12th June – just seven days away from the release date of Sense8, Netflix’s original sci-fi series by The Wachowskis.
