NBC has renewed New Amsterdam for three more seasons.
Based on the best-selling book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer and his fifteen years as Medical Director at the hospital, the show stars Ryan Eggold (The Blacklist) as Dr. Max Goodwin, Janet Montgomery (The Romanoffs) as Dr. Lauren Bloom, Freema Agyeman (Doctor Who) as Dr. Helen Sharpe, Jocko Sims (Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan) as Dr. Floyd Reynolds, Anupam Kher (Silver Linings Playbook) as Dr. Vijay Kapoor and Tyler Labine (StartUp) as Dr. Iggy Frome.
Inspired by the oldest public hospital in America, the drama follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Goodwin, the institution’s newest medical director who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care.
Season 2 of the drama finally arrived in the UK last December, with Amazon Prime Video holding the exclusive streaming rights. NBC, though, is already looking to the future, handing out an early renewal to the show not just for a third season, but a fourth and fifth too.
That makes New Amsterdam one of NBC’s tentpole shows, following in the footsteps of a similar renewal for This Is Us last year. Indeed, the series racks up an average of 9.8 million viewers in the US and was the first rookie show in the US last year to get a season-two renewal. The other NBC series to score an early renewal? Brooklyn Nine-Nine.
NBC broke the news at its panel during the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour. There is no word yet on when Season 3 will begin production, but you can expect it to arrive on Amazon Prime Video later this year.
