Netflix’s Roma wins 3 Oscars

Netflix’s Roma made history last night, winning a trio of awards at the 2019 Oscars.
Alfonso Cuaron’s Mexican drama went into the evening as the joint favourite, alongside The Favourite, with both movies nominated for 10 Academy Awards. While the buzz suggested it might bag the big prize, Netflix failed to become the first VOD service to win a Best Picture Oscar – but the film nonetheless triumphed with three historic wins, each one a first for a streaming film. Roma was crowned Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, as well as winning Cuaron two prizes, one for Best Director and one for Best Cinematography.
Cuaron accepted the prizes with humility and gratitude, saying that “as artists, our job is to look where others don’t”. Despite the success of such a progressive, diverse production, though, the night was ruled over by Green Book, given three gongs, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay, and Bohemian Rhapsody, which won four, including Best Actor for Rami Malek. Black Panther, deservedly, also came through with three prizes (Costume Design, Production Design and Original Score), and other delights included Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse being named Best Animated Feature, A Star Is Born winning Best Original Song for Shallow, and Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman bagging Best Adapted Screenplay.
Netflix’s wins, meanwhile, weren’t solely limited to Roma, with the inspirational short film Period. End of Sentence. being named Best Short Documentary – the second time Netflix has won that prize, following The White Helmets in a previous year. But the night belonged, without a doubt, to Olivia Colman, who won the only prize for The Favourite, but made sure it was one to remember, with a Best Actress acceptance speech that balanced honesty and humour with blowing a raspberry. “It’s genuinely quite stressful. This is hilarious. I’ve got an Oscar!” she exclaimed.
