“You’re not a hit man. You can’t be.” That’s the sound of Glen Powell bringing an unlikely true story to the screen in Richard Linklater’s Hit Man – and a new trailer gives us a first look at the comedy thriller.
Powell plays Gary, a strait-laced professor who uncovers his hidden talent as a fake hit man in undercover police stings. He meets his match in a client (Adria Arjona) who steals his heart and ignites a powder keg of deception, delight, and mixed-up identities.
Written and directed by Richard Linklater (Apollo 10 1/2) and co-written by Glen Powell, the film co-stars Austin Amelio (Everybody Wants Some, AMC’s The Walking Dead), Retta (Good Boys, NBC’s Good Girls), and Molly Bernard (Sully, The Intern, Paramount+’s Younger). The film will premiere in select UK cinemas in May before hitting Netflix on 7th June.

Netflix sets sights on Richard Linklater’s Hit Man
20th September 2023
Richard Linklater and Netflix are teaming up once again, as the streamer has his latest film Hit Man in its sights.
The director of School of Rock, Boyhood and Before Midnight co-wrote the film with Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), based on Skip Hollandsworth’s ‘Texas Monthly’ article. It follows Gary Johnson, the most sought-after professional killer in New Orleans. To his clients, he is like something out of a movie: the mysterious gun for hire. But if you pay him to rub out a cheating spouse or an abusive boss, you’d better watch your back – he works for the cops. When he breaks protocol to help a desperate woman trying to flee an abusive husband, he finds himself becoming one of his false personas, falling for the woman and flirting with turning into a criminal himself.
Powell will star as Johnson, alongside Adria Arjona (Father of The Bride, Morbius, 6 Underground), Austin Amelio (Everybody Wants Some, AMC’s The Walking Dead), Retta (Good Boys, NBC’s Good Girls), and Molly Bernard (Sully, The Intern, Paramount+’s Younger).
The film is produced by Mike Blizzard, Richard Linklater, Glen Powell, Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan. After its premiere at the Venice Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival, Netflix has nabbed the UK rights to the movie, along with the United States, Australia, New Zealand, India, South Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, Philippines and Iceland.
The deal follows the release of Linklater’s Apollo 10 1/2 on Netflix last year. No release date for Hit Man has yet been announced. The film will next play at the London Film Festival in October.
