Netflix cancels Fate: The Winx Saga after 2 seasons

Netflix has cancelled Fate: The Winx Saga after two seasons.
The live-action fantasy series follows the coming-of-age journey of five fairies attending Alfea, a magical boarding school in the Otherworld where they must learn to master their magical powers while navigating love, rivalries, and the monsters that threaten their very existence.
The show was rapidly renewed for a second run after its initial premiere, with the main cast reprising their roles, including Abigail Cowen as Bloom, Hannah van der Westhuysen as Stella, Precious Mustapha as Aisha, Eliot Salt as Terra and Elisha Applebaum as Musam.
Now, though, a couple of months after Season 2 debuted, showrunner Brian Young (The Vampire Diaries) has confirmed that the show will not return for a third run.
“This is not fun news to share, but Netflix [has] decided not to move forward with Season 3 of Fate: The Winx Saga,” he said in a statement. “This is especially tough because I know how many of you loved this season. It’s a heartbreaking silver lining, but a silver lining all the same. I’m so proud of everyone who worked on the show, and so happy we got to tell the stories we did. Our cast and crew put in a ton of hard work creating this world and these characters. I’m grateful for each and every one of them, and for all of you for watching. It’s been an amazing four years. Hopefully we’ll see each other again in the future.”
The show’s cancellation comes as Netflix is increasingly stringent in its decisions to renew programmes, with high viewing figures not the only factor being considered by the streamer. The Sandman, for example, has been a hugely popular show since its August release, but is still yet to be renewed for a second season.
Netflix renews Fate: The Winx Saga for Season 2
21st February 2021
Netflix has renewed Fate: The Winx Saga for a second season.
The live-action fantasy series follows the coming-of-age journey of five fairies attending Alfea, a magical boarding school in the Otherworld where they must learn to master their magical powers while navigating love, rivalries, and the monsters that threaten their very existence.
The show premiered last month, but within a few weeks Netflix has already given a green light to a second chapter. The cast set to reprise their roles include Abigail Cowen as Bloom, Hannah van der Westhuysen as Stella, Precious Mustapha as Aisha, Eliot Salt as Terra and Elisha Applebaum as Musam, with additional casting announced at a later date.
Brian Young (The Vampire Diaries) will return as Showrunner and Executive Producer. Executive Producers also set to return alongside Brian Young include: Judy Counihan and Kris Thykier from Archery Pictures (Riviera, The State) plus Joanne Lee and Cristiana Buzzelli from Rainbow.
Young says: “The six episodes in season one only scratched the surface of this incredibly rich world and the powerful fairies who inhabit it. As Bloom’s story continues to evolve, I can’t wait for you to learn even more about Aisha, Stella, Terra, and Musa! And you never know who might show up at Alfea next term…”
Iginio Straffi, creator of the Winx Club and Founder and CEO of Rainbow Group adds: “Winx connects with audiences in the live action adaptation the same way it does in animation. Over the years, we have seen Winx grow into a global phenomenon and millions of fans have faithfully followed the show. Thanks to this loyal support, ‘Fate: The Winx Saga’ is a massive worldwide success, with a second season underway at Netflix that will continue the story to the delight of fans and viewers everywhere.”
Season 2 will comprise 8 episodes, with production beginning later this year in Ireland.
Fate: The Winx Saga is available on Netflix UK, as part of an £9.99 monthly subscription.
