Netflix has ordered documentary series about Take That and Victoria Beckham.
Recent years have seen a wave of 90s nostalgia projects looking back at key celebrities and pop culture figures. Last year, the streamer took us behind the scenes of David Beckham’s life and career last year with the docuseries Beckham. Now, it’s following it with another project from Studio 99 and Dorothy St Pictures.
The series will follow Victoria Beckham and her fashion and beauty business. Through an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Victoria’s business, access to Victoria, her family, those closest to her and her fashion journey and including never-before-seen archive, the series will tell the story of Victoria’s reinvention as a Creative Director of her own brand.
Take That will tell the story of one of the greatest boy bands in UK history. For more than 30 years, they have brought us hit after hit, 12 of which became UK number ones. With access to Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Mark Owen and featuring interviews with Jason Orange and Robbie Williams, this project – from Fullwell 73 Productions and directed by David Soutar – will give unprecedented insight into one of the most successful and well-loved British bands.
The two projects lead a slate of new titles announced at the Edinburgh TV Festival last week, including documentaries Being Gordon Ramsay, 7/7: Hunting the London Bombers and Matchroom: The Greatest Showmen.
Production is already under way on Being Gordon Ramsey, a series about multi Michelin starred British chef. The series will follow Gordon Ramsay over 9 months in the lead up to his biggest restaurant venture to date: the opening of 5 culinary experiences in London’s 22 Bishopsgate, the City of London’s tallest building. The series will have exclusive access to the Ramsay family, as Gordon balances other work commitments and life as a husband and father, with wife Tana and their 6 children. The series is produced by Studio Ramsay Global, a FOX Entertainment Company.
7/7: Hunting The London Bombers will chart the untold story of one of the most devastating terror attacks on British soil – and the three weeks of panic, paranoia, and manhunts that changed Britain. 20 years ago, four bombs exploded in London killing 52 people and injuring more than 700. This multi-perspective series will track the frenzied weeks that followed and the hunt to find those responsible. Featuring previously unseen archive and exclusive interviews with survivors, family members, investigators, intelligence services and those closest to the events, the series will reveal the shockwaves that followed the first explosions. As the county struggled to make sense of shocking and unprecedented events, the authorities raced against time to identify the bombers and stop further attacks. Directed by Liza Williams, it is produced by The Garden, part of ITV Studios.
Matchroom: The Greatest Scandal is a documentary series that will get up close and personal with one of the biggest sports promoters in the world. Matchroom is home to the biggest names in sport – from snooker to darts to fishing to boxing – and is the epicentre of some of the most lucrative deals and sporting events globally. With unprecedented access to Barry Hearn, his son Eddie and the whole Matchroom team at the Essex based HQ, this documentary series will dive into the drama of the family empire that has become synonymous with British sporting culture.
Netflix also announced year three of the Documentary Talent Fund. The Fund which supports the work of the next generation of documentary filmmakers will give five filmmakers, and their teams, the chance to make a short documentary film with a budget of £30,000 each. All teams will be under the guidance of Netflix and other filmmaking professionals.
