Netflix orders Mexican political series Ingobernable
24th July 2015
Netflix has ordered a new Mexican political drama to join its growing list of non-English language original series.
Ingobernable will star Kate del Castillo as Mexico’s next First Lady, Irene Urzua. A woman with a strong personality, conviction and clear ideas, Urzua is capable of “creating a president, leaving a president and killing a president”, says the streaming giant.
“I absolutely love the role. It’s challenging, it’s risky, it’s compelling. The storyline and the cast are excellent. The kind of content Netflix is synonymous with. I am so happy to be part of the team.” says Del Castillo.
“This is like nothing people have seen me in before.”
The 20-episode series, which will be produced by Argos and directed by Jose Luis Garcia Agraz and Pedro Pablo Ibarra, will start shooting in Mexico early 2016. It joins a growing roster of non-English language original content on the site, as it diversifies its production slate to match its ever-expanding range of international territories.
Next month, the company’s first original Spanish-language show will premiere on Netflix: Club de Cuervos, a family comedy set in the world of futbol from Mexican filmmaker Gaz Alazraki.
“Netflix is committed to the creation of high quality, Spanish language original series for Mexico, US, Latin America and the world,” says Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer. “We are thrilled to be working with one of Latin America’s biggest and most talented stars.”
