Netflix drops first trailer for GLOW Season 3

“So, how’s Vegas?” The first trailer for GLOW Season 3 has dropped, and the show is looking more glamorous than ever.

Netflix’s wrestling comedy, inspired by the the short-lived but beloved titular series from the 80s, follows Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), a struggling out-of-work actress as she joins the first ever women’s wrestling TV show, alongside a mixed ensemble of costumed misfits. Created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds), the show has become one of Netflix’s most distinct programmes, with Season 2 seeing the women become local celebrities, confronting the good, the bad, and the ugly realities of their newfound fame.

Season 3 follows the girls as they go to Las Vegas and headline at the Fan-Tan Hotel & Casino. With Geena Davis on board as Sandy Devereaux St. Clair, the entertainment director of the hotel, and a whole host of drama swimming underneath the glitzy surface, the stage is set for a show-stopping third run. In Vegas, anything glows.

Geena Davis joins GLOW Season 3

Geena Davis has joined the cast of GLOW for Season 3.

Created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds), the show has become one of Netflix’s most distinct programmes, with Season 2 seeing the women become local celebrities, confronting the good, the bad, and the ugly realities of their newfound fame.

Season 3 follows the girls as they go to Las Vegas and headline at the Fan-Tan Hotel & Casino. And who do you get to run such a venue? Why, Geena Davis, of course. Davis will play Sandy Devereaux St. Clair, the entertainment director of the hotel, Netflix has announced. You can see her in action alongside the rest of the ensemble on Friday 9th August. GLOW is heading to Vegas for its third season this summer, and now, we know when it’s taking off.

Inspired by the short-lived but beloved titular series from the 80s – and created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds) – the series follows Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), a struggling out-of-work actress as she auditions for, trains and eventually makes the first ever women’s wrestling TV show, alongside a mixed ensemble of costumed misfits.

Season 2 followed the women of GLOW as they become local celebrities, confronting the good, the bad, and the ugly realities of their newfound fame.

We praised the second season for its “pithy and hilarious one-liners” in our review.

“Season 2 benefits greatly from the heavy lifting and world building that GLOW’s first season did so well, and thus has breathing space for characters that didn’t get the screen time we would’ve liked on its first outing, particularly women of colour,” we added.

Now, after waiting months for a third season to be announced, Netflix has finally revealed its release date: GLOW Season 3 will premiere on Friday 9th August, and follows the girls as they go to Las Vegas and headline at the Fan-Tan Hotel & Casino.

Netflix renews GLOW for Season 3

Netflix has officially renewed GLOW for a third season.

While the sophomore run was unanimously praised by critics and viewers alike, Netflix took its time in announcing a third season. Earlier this summer, Netflix’s programming chief, Cindy Holland, told the TCA press tour that Netflix would be “really thrilled to make more, but I don’t have anything to share with you just yet”.

Now, with two Emmy nominations under its belt this year for Comedy Series and Supporting Actress (Betty Gilpin), Netflix has officially confirmed that another bout is on the way.

The Gorgeous Ladies Of Wrestling are back in town, and a new trailer gives us a fabulous look at what Season 2 has in store.

Inspired by the short-lived but beloved titular series from the 80s, the series follows Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), a struggling out-of-work actress as she auditions for, trains and eventually makes the first ever women’s wrestling TV show, alongside a mixed ensemble of costumed misfits.

Season 2 follows the women of GLOW as they become local celebrities, confronting the good, the bad, and the ugly realities of their newfound fame. As Ruth and Debbie settle into the day-to-day of making a season of TV together, they confront lingering issues at the heart of their friendship. Sam is still Sam, but now he has a teenage daughter living with him and twenty episodes to churn out. The wrestling is harder, the stakes are higher, and the hair is even bigger.

Get ready to go back in the ring this summer, as GLOW returns for Season 2.

Netflix’s 1980s wrestling comedy is inspired by the short-lived but beloved titular series from the 80s – and created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds). It follows Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), a struggling out-of-work actress as she auditions for, trains and eventually makes the first ever women’s wrestling TV show, alongside a mixed ensemble of costumed misfits.

“Much like the opening credits of recent Netflix genre crossover hit Stranger Things, it perfectly sets the tone for a completely immersive 80s world of analogue technology and pulpy fiction,” we wrote in our review of Season 1. “But instead of creeping horror, on offer is laugh-out-loud comedy, ever-engrossing drama and, of course, the ridiculously fun aesthetics of 80s wrestling. Think hairspray, leg warmers and loud lycra leotards.”

Annabella Sciorra joins GLOW Season 2

Annabella Sciorra has signed up for Season 2 of GLOW.

Now, the show’s ensemble is getting even bigger, with Sciorra tapped for a recurring role in the series. Deadline reports The Sopranos veteran will play Rosalie Biagi, the mother of the youngest member of the wrestling team.

Netflix has renewed Glow for a second season.

Set in 1985 Los Angeles, GLOW follows Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), a struggling out-of-work actress as she auditions for, trains and eventually makes the first-ever women’s wrestling TV show.

Now, within two months of the show’s debut, the streaming giant has ordered another 10 episodes of the series.

That’s Alison Brie as Ruth in Netflix’s GLOW, the wrestling comedy that you didn’t know you needed in your life. The show, which is inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s, GLOW tells the fictional story of an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling.

Working with 12 Hollywood misfits, the team find themselves on the path to wrestling super stardom, under the tutelage of Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director. The result promises all the things you could want from a story about women throwing convention and gender roles out of the ring: robots, drugs, fist-fights, tits, blood and storytelling.

The drama, created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds), and exec-produced by Orange Is the New Black creator Jenji Kohan, tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles, who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling.

In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, B-movie director who now must lead this group of women on the journey to wrestling stardom.

Netflix’s new female wrestling series will be making its way into the ring this summer.

GLOW, executive produced by Orange Is the New Black’s Jenji Kohan and Tara Herrmann, is inspired by the short-lived but beloved show from the 80s. It tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie), an out-of-work, struggling actress in 1980s Los Angeles who finds one last chance for stardom when she’s thrust into the glitter and spandex world of women’s wrestling. In addition to working with 12 Hollywood misfits, Ruth also has to compete with Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin) a former soap actress who left the business to have a baby, only to be sucked back into work when her picture perfect life is not what it seems. And at the wheel is Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron), a washed-up, coked-up B-movie director who now must lead 14 women on the journey to wrestling stardom.

GLOW is created by Liz Flahive (Homeland, Nurse Jackie) and Carly Mensch (Nurse Jackie, Orange Is The New Black, Weeds), both of whom are serving as showrunners.

The project was first announced last year. Now, it has an official release date: Friday 23rd June.

Chris Lowell cast in recurring role on Netflix’s G.L.O.W.

Chris Lowell has been cast in a recurring role on Netflix’s new wrestling comedy, G.L.O.W..

Created by Jenji Kohan, the show, which is inspired by the real 1980s female wrestling league, follows the fictional story of Ruth, an out-of-work actress who finds a weekly series about female wrestlers offers her one last chance at fame and success.

The series already has a formidable ensemble cast lined up, with Alison Brie in the lead as Ruth, supported by Marc Maron as manager Sam Sylvia, Kimmy Gatewood as hairdresser Stacey, Rebekka Johnson as Dawn, Stacey’s best friend and Kate Nash as British model Rhonda.

Lowell will join them as Sebastian Howard, a wealthy playboy whose obsession with wrestling leads him to create and fund the world’s first female wrestling show. He can currently be seen in Epix’s Graves, with previous feature film credits including The Help, Up in the Air and Veronica Mars.

Netflix adds Britt Baron and Jackie Tohn to G.L.O.W.

Netflix has added two more names to its growing ensemble cast for wrestling comedy series G.L.O.W..

Alison Brie plays Ruth, with a supporting cast that includes: Marc Maron as manager Sam Sylvia; Kimmy Gatewood as hairdresser Stacey; Rebekka Johnson as Dawn, Stacey’s best friend; Kate Nash as British model Rhonda; Sunita Mani as med student Arthie; Kia Stevens as 80s TV actress Tammé; Britney Young as Carmen Wade, an unexperienced actress with big dreams; and Sydelle Noel as Cherry Bang, a stunt woman whose career has peaked.

Now, Netflix has added another two recurring names to its roster: Britt Baron and Jackie Tohn.

Baron, who has appeared in Criminal Minds, will play teenage runaway Justine. Tohn will play Melrose, a “Hollywood party girl”. Tohn is no stranger to the streaming site: after a turn in Sisters with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, she has just played Gilda Radner in Netflix’s A Futile and Stupid Gesture, directed by David Wain.

Britney Young, Marc Maron and Sydelle Noel join Netflix’s G.L.O.W.

Britney Young, Marc Maron and Sydelle Noel have joined the growing cast of Netflix’s G.L.O.W..

The 10-episode comedy, which is exec produced by Orange Is the New Black’s Jenji Kohan, is inspired by the true story of the 1980s female wrestling league: Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, the female equivalent of the WWF.

It was created by Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (OITNB), who will serve as showrunners on the show and will also exec produce.

The show was announced earlier this summer and has since rapidly begun assembling its cast, with Alison Brie starring as Ruth, an out-of-work actress who finds in a weekly series about the female wrestling group one final opportunity to live her dreams.

Britney Young will join Brie as Carmen Wade, “a big girl with big dreams and zero experience in front of a camera”. Sydelle Noel will also play another of the women: Cherry Bang, “a professional stunt woman whose career peaked in the Blaxploitation heyday, now looking for a chance to do more than double”.

The team will be led by Sam Sylvia, a washed-up Hollywood director who has a “very complicated history with women”, but must now shepherd 14 of them on the journey to wrestling stardom. Marc Maron has signed on to star as Sam, the show’s male lead opposite Brie.

Maron, of course, is no stranger to the streaming giant: he will also appear in Joe Swanberg’s Netflix series, Easy, which premieres later this month. Young can also be found on Netflix UK in the recently acquired Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.

Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin to star in Jenji Kohan’s Netflix wrestling series

Alison Brie and Betty Gilpin have signed on to star in Jenji Kohan’s Netflix wrestling series, G.L.O.W.

The 10-episode comedy, which is exec produced by the Orange Is the New Black creator, is created by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch. Inspired by the true story of the 1980s female wrestling league, the story is set in Los Angeles and follows Ruth, an out-of-work actress who finds one last attempt to live her dreams when she’s thrust into the glittery world of women’s wrestling via a weekly series about female wrestlers.

Brie, who is best known for her role in Community, has gone on to steal scenes in a variety of films, but will return to the small screen for the Netflix show. She will play Ruth, with Betty Gilpin starring opposite her.

The Nurse Jackie veteran will play Debbie Eagan, a soap star who left showbiz to have a baby, but is sucked back in after her ideal life turns out not to be what it seemed.

Kohan and Tara Herrmann executive produce the series, with Flahive and Mensch both serving as showrunners.

Netflix orders female wrestling series from Jenji Kohan

Netflix has ordered a new wrestling series from Orange Is the New Black’s Jenji Kohan.

Kohan’s prison drama has gone on to become one of the streaming service’s most popular original programmes. Now, though, Kohan is breaking out from behind bars and fighting her way into a completely different arena: a wrestling comedy.

Set in the 1980s Los Angeles, G.L.O.W. is inspired by the real story of the 1980s female wrestling league. Deadline reports that the show will tell the “fictionalised story of an out-of-work actress who finds one last attempt to live her dreams in the form of a weekly series about female wrestlers”.

The comedy will span 10 episodes and is exec produced by Kohan and her OITNB co-exec producer Tara Herrmann. It was created by Liz Flahive (Homeland) and Carly Mensch (OITNB), who will serve as showrunners on the show and will also exec produce.

G.L.O.W. stands for “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling”, the female answer to the male-dominated World Wrestling Federation. The Reagan-era league was “showcased in the eponymous kitschy, Las Vegas-based syndicated TV series, which ran for four seasons, featuring sketches, songs and wrestling”, notes Deadline.

Kohan is far from finished with Litchfield, though: Orange Is the New Black returns on Friday 17th June for a fourth season.
