Netflix leads Emmy nominations for the first time

Netflix is leading the nominations for the 2018 Emmys for the first time. HBO has held the most-nominated crown for 17 years in a row, but this year, Netflix has overtaken the cable network and knocked it off the top spot, with a whopping 112 nods, up from 91 last year and ahead of HBO’s 108.
HBO’s dominance by programme continues, with Game of Thrones at the front of the pack with 22 nominations, followed by Saturday Night Life (21) and Westworld (21). But the landscape is notably shifting, as the 70th annual TV awards showcase streaming series The Handmaid’s Tale (from Hulu), as well as Netflix’s Stranger Things. With Veep out of the running this year, Amazon has also stepped into the spotlight with The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel bagging 14 nods in only its first season. Maisel is joined in the Outstanding Comedy race by fellow freshman shows Barry and GLOW, as well as returning contenders Atlanta, black-ish, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Silicon Valley and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Netflix, meanwhile, has its heavyweight of The Crown competing for Best Drama, alongside The Americans (FX), Game Of Thrones (HBO) The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu), Stranger Things (Netflix), This Is Us (NBC),
and Westworld (HBO).
Netflix’s sheer range of award nominations emphasises its stronger position compared to rival Amazon, with Prime Video picking up smaller nods for The Tick and Mozart in the Jungle, but primarily relying on Mrs. Maisel for its potential prize haul. Netflix, on the other hand, has everything from Ozark’s Jason Bateman up for Lead Actor in a Drama and Grace and Frankie’s Lily Tomlin up for Lead Actress in a Comedy to Jesse Plemons for Lead Actor in a Limited Series for Black Mirror’s USS Callister episode. Cameron Britton in Mindhunter is also nominated for Guest Actor in a Drama, while Queer Eye is nominated for Structured Reality Program – 14 years after the original seres won an award, as Netflix’s push into reality series pays off.
Michelle Dockery is also nominated for her role in Netflix’s Godless, which is also up for Limited Series, alongside Patrick Melrose, which is also up for Lead Actor in a Limited Series. Benedict Cumberbatch is going head to head with Darren Criss in The Assassination Of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story (the fifth most-nominated series, with 18 nods) for that award, as well as Jeff Daniels in The Looming Tower. With Amazon bagging the exclusive UK rights to the latter, the Emmys highlight how much strength Amazon Prime Video gains in the UK from its acquisitions, rather than its own original output.
Jeff Daniels is also nominated for his role in Netflix’s Godless. He joins a list of multiple nominees that includes (but is not limited to) Jason Bateman for Ozark, Alex Borstein for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Family Guy, Sterling K. Brown for This Is Us and Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Donald Glover for Atlanta and Saturday Night Live, Bill Hader for Barry and Saturday Night Live, Jane Lynch for Hollywood Game Night and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Alex Berg for Barry and Silicon Valley, The Duffer Brothers for Stranger Things, Scott Frank for Godless and Amy Sherman-Palladino for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
As streaming shows such as GLOW (10 noms), Wild Wild Country (5 noms), The Crown (13 noms) and The Handmaid’s Tale (20 noms) begin to jostle with the traditional programmes, there’s also room for the series that combine the old and the new: fans will be delighted to see that David Lynch’s timeless revival of Twin Peaks has 9 nominations under its belt, just ahead of This Is Us (8) and American Horror Story: Cult (7).
The prizes will be handed out on Monday 17th September. Here’s the list of all the major category nominees. For the whole list, see the Emmy’s website.
