The Trial of the Chicago 7, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom lead 2021 SAG Award winners

Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 led the way at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, on a night that delivered a diverse line-up of winners.
Netflix went into the night at the head of the pack with 30 nods overall, including Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture prize for Aaron Sorkin’s drama. It ended up winning that top prize, beating competition from Minari and Amazon’s One Night in Miami, as well as Netflix’s own Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods. This is the first time a streaming service has taken home that top ensemble award.
Netlix also enjoyed double success with Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, with Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis named Best Male Actor and Best Female Actor for the adaptation of August Wilson’s play. With Minari’s Yuh-Jung Youn winning Best Female Supporting Actor and Daniel Kaluuya named Best Male Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah, the evening marked the first time when all the individual SAG prizes went to actors of colour.
Schitt’s Creek went out in style, with the comedy’s final season taking home the ensemble prize for comedy series, as well as the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series prize for Catherine O’Hara.
Apple TV+ comedy Ted Lasso continued to score winners with Jason Sudeikis winning the Male Actor in a Comedy Series prize for the footballing show. Mark Ruffalo won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for his twin turn in HBO’s I Know This Much Is True. But Netflix still reigned on the small screen, with The Queen’s Gambit taking home the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series for Anya-Taylor Joy’s lead role, while The Crown took home two prizes: Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for Gillian Anderson and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Netflix leads 2021 Screen Actors Guild award nominees
6th February 2021
Netflix is leading this year’s nominees for the Screen Actors Guild awards, with Chadwick Boseman double-nominated for two films.
The late Black Panther star was nominated for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Da 5 Bloods, named both as the individual nominee for lead and supporting actor respectively, but also as part of the ensemble prize for each film.
Those nominations are part of 30 overall for the streamer, with The Trial of the Chicago 7 also nominated for the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture prize – alongside Minari and Amazon’s One night in Miami.
Gary Oldman, Amy Adams, Viola Davis, Vanessa Kirby, Sacha Baron Cohen and Glenn Close joined the list of Netflix performances nominated for awards, while Amazon distributed three movies up for nominations: Sound of Metal, starring Riz Ahmed, One Night in Miami, starring Leslie Odom Jr and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, which earned star Maria Bakalova a nod.
Netflix’s TV shows were also highlighted by the SAG awards, with The Crown, Bridgerton, Better Call Saul and Ozark all in the mix, alongside Lovecraft Country. Apple TV+, though, has also made its mark once again, with Ted Lasso nominated for both the ensemble comedy award and Jason Sudeikis for the leading male comedy prize. Fellow fledgling streamer Disney+ also won nods for Hamilton (Daveed Diggs) and The Mandalorian and Mulan.
The nominees were announced by Emily in Paris star Lily Collins and Daveed Diggs on Instagram Live. The winners will be presented in a ceremony on 4th April.
