Netflix is teaming up with Legendary Television for a new Skull Island animated series.
The first animated show based on Legendary’s Skull Island, it opens a new chapter in Legendary’s expanding Monsterverse franchise. Beginning in 2014 with Godzilla, continuing with 2017’s Kong: Skull Island and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the Monsterverse films have accumulated over one billion dollars at the box office internationally, and March 2021 sees the next instalment in the cinematic Monsterverse, Godzilla vs Kong.
The adventure series follows shipwrecked characters desperate to escape the most dangerous place on Earth — a mysterious island home to prehistoric monsters, including the greatest titan of them all, Kong.
Executive producers of the show include Brian Duffield (Underwater, The Babysitter), who will write, and Jacob Robinson, under his company Tractor Pants. It will be animated by Powerhouse Animation (Castlevania, Blood of Zeus).
The series marks Netflix’s ongoing relationship with Legendary Television, with a Tomb Raider series also announced today and the two companies are currently in production on the previously announced anime series Pacific Rim: The Black.
