Netflix leads 2021 Golden Globes nominees with Mank and The Crown
James R | On 03, Feb 2021
Netflix is leading this year’s nominations for the Golden Globes, with a whopping 42 nods under its belt. That’s primarily driven by Mank in the feature film race, with 7 nominations, and The Crown in the TV categories, with 6 nominations. But it’s also boosted by nominations for both Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and double nominations for hit shows such as Unorthodox and The Queen’s Gambit.
Netflix’s success sets the tone for a year in which streaming services have driven the entertainment landscape. Indeed, Amazon Studios has 10 nods in total – 7 for films and 3 for TV shows (including Small Axe, which it co-produced with the BBC) – and Hulu nabbed 10 nods, while Apple TV+ has 4 nods.
Apple’s first year in the awards race has been spearheaded by Ted Lasso, Sofia Coppola’s On the Rocks and Cartoon Saloon’s Wolfwalkers, while Amazon Studios has enjoyed recognition for Regina King’s One Night in Miami. Perhaps most tellingly, though, is that a number of the prominent film nominees have been bought up by streaming services in the wake of cinema closures during the coronavirus pandemic, including The Trial of the Chicago 7 (Netflix), Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (Amazon Studios) and, in the UK, News of the World (Netflix) and Palm Springs (Amazon Studios).
Mank and The Trial of the Chicago are the most nominated movies in the field, with 6 and 5 nods respectively, ahead of The Father, Nomadland and Promising Young Woman (all with 4 apiece). The Crown is the most nominated TV show, with 6 nods, ahead of Schitt’s Creek (5 nods) and Ozark and The Undoing (both with 4).
Netflix makes up two of the Best Motion Picture (Drama) contenders, which include The Father, Mank, Nomadland, Promising Young Woman and The Trial of the Chicago 7. Netflix also has The Prom competing for Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy) against Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Palm Springs, Music and Disney+’s Hamilton.
The Best Musical of Comedy TV Series will be fought by Emily in Paris, The Flight Attendant, The Great, Shitt’s Creek and Ted Lasso, while the Best Drama TV Series will be between The Crown, The Mandalorian, Lovecraft Country, Ozark and Ratched.
Notable snubs include Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, the hyped outside-contender Malcolm and Marie, Francis Lee’s Ammonite, Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci drama Supernova, Netflix hit Bridgerton and – most notable of all – Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You.
Encouragingly, however, female filmmakers dominate the Best Director nominees, which include Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman), Regina King (One Night in Miami), Chloé Zhao (Nomadland), David Fincher (Mank) and Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7).
The awards ceremony will take place on 28th February at 8pm EST, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting (for the fourth time) virtually from New York’s Rainbow Room and the California’s Beverly Hilton.
