The animated revival of the iconic character, who was all the rage in the 1990s, reintroduced us to the super thief, a globe-trotting criminal who only steals from other criminals. Netflix’s new take on the character explores the woman in red’s past and how and why she became a super burglar will be answered. Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez voices Carmen over 20 episodes, alongside Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard as Player, Carmen’s chief accomplice.
Now, within a month of the show’s debut, the streaming giant has already ordered more from the sleuth.

Netflix unveils new theme tune for Carmen Sandiego
5th January 2019
Carmen Sandiego returns to Netflix next week, but not as you know her. Netflix’s reboot of the iconic 90s cartoon will focus on “who” rather than “where” Carmen Sandiego is, has swapped up the animation style, and will also be giving us a new take on the Carmen theme tune. Now, you can hear it for yourself.
A thief who only steals from other thieves, Netflix’s take on the character will explore the woman in red’s past and how and why she became a super burglar will be answered. Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez will voice Carmen over 20 episodes, alongside Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard as Player, Carmen’s chief accomplice.
For nostalgic fans of the original, the idea of rebooting the series will raise a number of questions, not least of which is what the theme song will sound like. The original theme, written by Rockapella, accompanied the PBS game show and was a hit, thanks to its novel acapella vibe. The song’s original writers have released a new take on the theme this week online, but confirmed that it won’t be used for Netflix’s series. Instead, Jared Lee Gosselin has penned a remix of the song, with Raquel Castro singing it.
You can listen to it here – along with the opening credits, which give us a taste of the art direction by Kevin Dart, which brings a new, sleek look to the Carmen universe.

Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego gets poster and January release date
11th December 2018
Netflix has unveiled a new poster for its upcoming Carmen Sandiego reboot – and confirmed a release date to boot.
The new animated series is bringing back the computer game hero several decades since she was first on our screens. With a game show and an Emmy-winning cartoon following in the 1990s, the character was an iconic part of a generation’s childhood, and the streaming giant is hoping for a similar response with today’s viewers.
Produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the animation will feature a host of new international capers. Where is the world is Carmen Sandiego? The new series will not just ask where the intrepid master thief is, but also who, exploring Carmen’s past and how and why she became a super burglar. Helping to give us an answer will be Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez, who will voice the character across 20 episodes, alongside Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard, who will voice Player, Carmen’s chief accomplice.
Duane Capizzi (The Batman) is showrunner of the show, co-exec producing the programme with CJ Kettler (The Tick) Caroline Fraser. Now, we know we won’t have to wait long to see the end result, with the series officially set to premiere on Friday 18th January. In the meantime, the first official poster for the show gives us a taste of the kind of animated style to expect.
Netflix is bringing back Carmen Sandiego
19th April 2017
Where is the world is Carmen Sandiego? Netflix is the answer, as the streaming giant has announced that it will be bringing back the character in a new animated series.
Yes, the classic 1980s computer game hero, who became famous in the 1990s with a PBS game show in the USA, followed by a cartoon (“Where on Earth Is Carmen Sandiego?”) that won Best Animated Program at the Emmys in 1996, is coming back to our screens. The new show will reportedly not just ask where the intrepid master thief is, but also who.
Jane the Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez will voice the character in a 20-episode series, reports Deadline. Produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the animation will feature a host of new international capers, alongside an exploration of Carmen’s past and how and why she became a super burglar. Alongside Rodriguez will be Stranger Things’ Mike (Finn Wolfhard – who has a name almost as cool as Carmen’s), who will voice Player, Carmen’s chief accomplice and friend.
Duane Capizzi (The Batman) is showrunner of the show, co-exec producing the programme with CJ Kettler (The Tick) Caroline Fraser.
The series is expected to premiere on Netflix in 2019. In the meantime, you can see a copy of the artwork released by the streaming service above.
