Netflix has inked an overall deal with Disenchantment’s Shion Takeuchi.
The adult animated comedy, which debuted this summer, is set in the crumbling medieval kingdom of Dreamland, and follows the misadventures of hard-drinking young princess Bean, her feisty elf companion, Elfo, and her personal demon, Luci. Along the way, the oddball trio will encounter ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and lots of human fools.
“Disenchantment needs time to develop into something truly special,” we wrote in our review. “It’s amusing enough to keep you watching and promises something far greater down the line. It has all the right ingredients for something magical.
While the series is mostly attributed to its showrunner, The Simpsons creator Matt Groening, the series was penned by a team of writers, and one of those voices grabbed Netflix’s attention. Staff writer Takeuchi already has an impressive CV, from the Story Department at Pixar (where she worked on Monsters University and Inside Out) to The Regular Show (Cartoon Network), Gravity Falls (Disney XD) and Lost In Oz (Amazon).
Takeuchi’s signing with Netflix highlights the company’s diverse tactics when it comes to talent – not only looking for prolific hit-makers such as Ryan Murphy and Shonda Rhimes, but also new and emerging creators. The multi-year overall deal will see her develop new series and other projects exclusively for Netflix.
